Apparently they are now longer than any year in the last 12.

My experience of A&E is that it seems that people go because they can't get to see their GP which is understandable but makes it worse.

I've just been to Mauritius. My friend trod on a sea urchin and had to go to hospital. He was seen within 5 minutes. Had a pain killing injection, had spikes removed, given antiseptic cream and antibiotics all for free even though he is British. Amazing service.

Part of the problem is people going to their GP for ailments that our grandparents generation would have been able to deal with themselves. The GP system is overloaded and the pressure rolls over to A&E.

I resent that remark ! That will not hold up in a liable court of law, I will be filing for a motion to strike that comment from the court. ‘Adjusts tie’ I’m now a lawyer

I've been to A&E twice with cardiac problems and been seen virtually immediately. If you can wait for hours you probably don't need to be there. I think they should remove the accident part to be honest and just call it the emergency department as that is what it is for. Not splinters and toothache. There is definitely an issue with a lack of resources for GPs and walk in centres but even then I've had fantastic service from GPs in a few parts of the country in genuine emergencies. Non-emergency care really needs some work but that's impossible without more money which they're unlikely to get.

Isn't it jus a symptom of larger problems like lack of other services making people go to a&e departments?

Nobody likes going there, I find it hard to believe anyone would be going out of enjoyment.

People go for stupid things, the accident and emergency bit is the clue.

There are pharmacies/GPs/ walk in centres/111 but people still insist on going to A&E for minor things and not being patient and trying other routes, they want curing straight away

You are correct. However it is also people going for simple reasons that require no medical attention at all, or the self inflicted alcohol/drug abuse users clogging up the wait times also. It's a huge varied list, but some people don't do much to help relieve the pressure it is under.

Mental health care also needs work, but again unlikely due to funding issues. Many people resort to sitting in A&E for hours with distressing mental illness symptoms but they would be better served in a department specifically for MH crises - because that environment is a horrendous place for a person who is actively responding to frightening hallucinations. But they have no alternative at present. Other than crisis teams who are also swamped and overwhelmed. It’s an awful situation.

..

I think it’s because people want an immediate solution and can’t get an appointment. I was at a hospital with someone last week and a nurse came to say the waiting time was 4 hours. Most people left when they realised. In my opinion you’re not that ill in that case. There were d*unks, police escorting people who had been arrested. It was awful. Coughs, cold, aching legs all sorts of nonsense.

Why don’t people access 111 for advice? See out of hours docs instead of turning up at A and E? Most of the time it’s simply unnecessary.

Only times I have waited an age were for a small cut that would not stop bleeding and when I had problems with a Mortons Nuroma and was told to go to A&E if it played up and that was by the surgeon I was under.

Most times been seen quickly, Got told off by A&E for driving my dad to them when he was having a diabetic sugar crash... I just shrugged and said I didn't think it warranted an ambulance... apparently it dd!

There is an app/website where you can check out the waiting times and go to one close by with less of a wait

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6966223/New-NHS-waiting-times-app-patients-hospitals-shortest-E-queue.html

I know it is the daily fail... sorry but the times only shows a snippet of the information

Problem is those who go to A&E unnecessarily and clog up the system.

This tends to be the weekend d*unks who end up paralytic, those who get pissed and fight as well as those hypochondriacs that have naff all wrong with them. In my opinion.

"I wonder if we should start charging for GP and A&E appointments?"

Slippery slope right there.

Firstly we are a free service at point of contact. Secondly bringing in charges will stop people seeing their GP's and ergo there will be a rapid decrease in early diagnosis leading to a rise in more invasive treatments with potentially higher risks & poor outcomes for the patients & higher costs of treatment.

So make the appointment. Anything more urgent call 111 or see your pharmacist. Also walk in centres and minor injury units are a godsend. Surely most gp surgeries offer emergency appointments. What about out of hours? What do they suggest you do about that?

"I must admit I do wonder what is taking them so long behind the scenes.. they do seem to amble.."

I can assure you there's no ambling "behind the scenes" - having the responsibility of someone's life literally in your hands does not cause staff to amble. It does cause them to have 12hrs plus shifts ( because you don't walk out mid way through treating a patient), set off for the loo and never get there and only remember several hrs later because something more important than your bladder has turned up, non existent breaks just because you just don't get time.

God forbid a patient should see a nurse stop for 5 minutes without being accussed of being lazy, feckless & uncaring

What use is an appointment in 3 weeks when I'm ill now? There are no walk in centres here. Emergency appointments are only available first thing and all go within minutes. There is no out of hours service.

Their suggestion is to call the next day at 8am. Which we do... wait in a queue... get through... and all appointments have gone.

the out of hours service here is a walk in clinic that shuts at 8 pm or a GP clinic at a hospital that shuts at 9 pm. If you are unable to travel the 15 miles to either destination you're left with very little choice

So make the appointment. Anything more urgent call 111 or see your pharmacist. Also walk in centres and minor injury units are a godsend. Surely most gp surgeries offer emergency appointments. What about out of hours? What do they suggest you do about that?

What use is an appointment in 3 weeks when I'm ill now? There are no walk in centres here. Emergency appointments are only available first thing and all go within minutes. There is no out of hours service.

Their suggestion is to call the next day at 8am. Which we do... wait in a queue... get through... and all appointments have gone.

There will be some sort of out of hours service whether that's provided by your gp or the NHS. I would move GPs if mine was that shit.

There is no out of hours service and no other GP practice in the local area.

Then 111 is still available. Or do you not have a phone either?"

Your attitude problem bores me.

What use is 111 to an elderly person? Unlike you I care about other people, not just myself.

North Bucks

After having an operation last year privately and then suffering complications that needed three A&E visits which resulted in me being admitted twice I cannot speak more highly of how I was treated and swiftly seen.

The Triage system worked perfectly. I was seen in under an hour and made comfortable with pain relief each time.

Very lucky to have something like the NHS in this country.

Social care needs fixing as well you can't find beds for new arrivals if there's folks on wards ready to leave but there's no care plan or somewhere more suitable for their needs to go to

The thread is about people using A&E because they can't get to see their GP. I am giving examples of issues some people have.

No idea why you can't understand issues that affect other people.

Calling 111 is not an acceptable option for some people. They want to see a doctor face to face.

I've noticed half of my GPs are never in and doing more private practice, maybe there should be stricter regulations and more transparency on what GPs are paid for and where they are spending their time.

As for those using the excuse of no GP appointments to go to A&E, they should make you wait longer then 4 hours.

They are full of people who just don’t need to be there. Why people go with minor things like a sprained ankle or minor graze is beyond me. Triage should be at the entrance and those who don’t warrant an a+e service should be turned away with an advice card. Or they should charge a nominal fee per visit, £30 is just enough to put the people off who don’t really need to go and not too much to stop people going who need to.

My experience at A&E Nottingham last week was 8-9 hours of waiting. People around with brain injuries: elderly people brought in by ambulance who were distressed and others disorientated, parents with injured children, adults with severe work injuries etc. It wasn't an alternative to a GP appointment room.

The NHS has been deliberately underfunded by the Conservative Party, at one point aided by the Libdems.

Its thoroughly disgraceful and people need to think long and hard before they vote, as you, your family and friends could be subject to irrecoverable damage to health or life.

Most GPs are only paid through their practice in which they are partners unless they are locum GPs. GP locum are paid by the practice.

The practice is paid by the NHS or other government departments according to its activities toward patients, its specialist availabilities or through generating it's own income via specific clinics.

If GPs were intent on denying appointments or refusing treatment then its practice would suffer financially.

If you can not get an appointment with your GP then it is due to time wasters, more needs than available appointments through increasing older patients or a lack of availability of locum assistance due to fewer GPs going to the profession.

Partner GPs rely on their practice being successful to generate an income, frequently having a second mortgage against the practice/their own home, or else they could fail to earn a salary at all after paying expenses to run the surgery.

The system is wrong not the GPs.

If you cannot get an appointment it is not through the lack of desire or trying of the Surgery or Partner GPs.

No mate it doesnt. I worked for the Ambo service. We took pleasure in wheeling those patients from the Ambo to the main waiting room with everyone else.

Every patient is triage'd if it's non emergency you get wheeled out into the waiting room. If it's minor. You goto minors if it major you go to majors.

I used to love seeing patients faces once we wheel them around because they think they'll jump the queue.

I've spent many hours in various a and e departments over the last seven years. I have noticed a steady increase in waiting time and difficulty of finding a bed if needed. Everyone in my experience is triaged on arrival and seen in order of need, if you need resuss of course you're straight through.

I don't think the reason is due to people who can't get doctors appointments, waiting for between four and six hours to see somebody is not an easy option. The problem is much more complicated that that and we shouldn't be side tracked by blame being passed yet again, on to the users of the system. The wait is down to lack of resources and staff and an inability of the system to cope with the demands placed on it

There's too many people in the UK.

Immigration has gone up over those 12 years but known and unknown. We haven't build the same amount of health centres and hospitals to accommodate the need.

If you call 111 they will advise you but they can also arrange for you to visit the out of hours doctors. Whilst it may be based at the hospital it is not A and E. I feel that is a better option.

I've been to a&e a few times, my daughter got bitten by a dog, it wasn't a serious injury but it did need looking at and cleaning properly. We had a 4 hour wait.

We took our son with suspected appendicitis, he was in a fair amount of pain but was stable. We had a 3 hour wait and after tests he was admitted.

I was taken when I had problems with gallstones, this time I was in horrendous pain, vomiting uncontrollably. I was triaged and in cubicles with a doctor within half an hour, I was then admitted with pancreatitis.

And I once took my husband when he started vomiting blood after days of being unwell.

He was triaged immediately, when the nurse saw how low his blood pressure was, he was put in a wheel chair and taken straight through to cubicles and a doctor saw him within 5 minutes.

It can be frustrating sitting for hours waiting but the only reason you'll be kept waiting is because you are fit and well enough to wait.

I've only got praise for the staff in a&e and the NHS in general. At least we only have a wait to worry about, we do t have to sit during that wait worrying about how we are going to pay for our treatment

I called my gp for an appointment once after receiving a cat bite. Cat bites get infected very easily so it’s always recommended to have a short course of antibiotics to prevent this. There were no appointments available so I was told to go to accident and emergency! What hope do they have if gp’s reception staff are advising patients to go for very minor things? I went to the walk in centre instead.

On the one occasion I did need to go to accident and emergency it was horrendous! I’ve become increasingly allergic to various things over the last few years. My allergic reactions are becoming more severe each time and could be life threatening. It started when I had a bad reaction to the flu jab and nhs111 sent an ambulance. They stabilised me and I declined to go in to hospital. A few months later, I had an allergic reaction to penicillin and my neighbour who is also allergic and knows the dangers rushed me in. I waited 4 hours just to be triaged!

Let's look at population growth over the last 60 years

The UK population in

1950 was 50.4 million

1980 was 56.3 million

2000 was 58.9 million

2019 is 67.6 million

So in the last twenty years we have had a 15% growth in our population.

It's no wonder that all public services are struggling to cope with an extra 9 million people in a relatively short time, without a massive increase in resources just trying to keep up.

Last year after I had my stomach peg fitted, next day had tea and breakfast, no problem..

Nurse came to show me how to clean it

This I think she dislodged it and there must have been a hole not sealed into my abdomen, so when they released me got home felt uncomfortable, so wife made me a large cuppa tea, I took a big mouthful swallowed... absolute agony!! Hot tea into my abdomen, ambulance called, thought it was my time the pain was so intense, had to have three shots of morphine to regulate my breathing before they could get me off the drive. Rushed to hospital where I was out on a trolley for 11- 12 hours, do I feel this was bad?

No other patients had bigger issues than me, eventually the pain subsided, there wasn’t much else that could be done except morphine and wait..

I managed to get home around 2am next morning, but all in all I praise the NHS

Without them I would not be here today...

Firstly sorry if I offend some genuine people attending A and E, but my experience and that of other people I have spoken to is this:

A lot of the A and E attendees are East European types who have recently entered the country and have coughed or sneezed and they think let’s take advantage of the free NHS service that that have paid very little or nothing towards and when they arrive at A and E they cannot speak English and hence they get prioritised because because they cannot speak English they are classed as vulnerable.

I appreciate this view may be controversial, but this is an open discussion and everyone is entitled to their own view

I think it's like building blocks. The foundations are the GPs. Get that right and the A and E will be able to cope on true emergencies.

Couple of years ago I developed a rash on my back, my then girlfriend suggested it could be shingles and that I should see my G.P. Unable to get an appointment with a G.P.I suggested perhaps I could see a Nurse Practioner, no problem come down now.Waited 10 minutes before being called in, she too thought I had shingles and duly called one of the G.P.s down to confirm it which they duly did. So I got to see my G.P.after all.

"I wonder if we should start charging for GP and A&E appointments?

Slippery slope right there.

Firstly we are a free service at point of contact. Secondly bringing in charges will stop people seeing their GP's and ergo there will be a rapid decrease in early diagnosis leading to a rise in more invasive treatments with potentially higher risks & poor outcomes for the patients & higher costs of treatment.

"Apparently they are now longer than any year in the last 12.

My experience of A&E is that it seems that people go because they can't get to see their GP which is understandable but makes it worse.

No chance of a GP appointment here within 3 weeks. It's an absolute joke.

Or do you not have a phone either?

On the few occasions I have used that service they said go to your GP or go to A&E... "

Same here

My GP offers a walk in clinic five mornings a week 8am - 10.30. Excellent.

"Firstly sorry if I offend some genuine people attending A and E, but my experience and that of other people I have spoken to is this:

A lot of the A and E attendees are East European types who have recently entered the country and have coughed or sneezed and they think let’s take advantage of the free NHS service that that have paid very little or nothing towards and when they arrive at A and E they cannot speak English and hence they get prioritised because because they cannot speak English they are classed as vulnerable.

I appreciate this view may be controversial, but this is an open discussion and everyone is entitled to their own view"

How do you know the nationality of the people in a and e departments and why they're there?

I don't think your view is controversial as such because it's quite commonly held but I'd like to know what evidence you have to back it up.

I don’t think it’s controversial, I think it’s racist and uneducated. But it’s your view and we’re all entitled to our own opinion

Ah I see, think you may have misunderstood. I did not say 'deliberately under funded'

I was quoting that shite and retorted with 'brain washed nonsense'

I made the point about how GPs have to fund surgeries themselves.

Surely nobody with enough intelligence to be able to breath without the need for an instruction manual believes that anyone deliberately under funds the NHS? That is just pathetic.

The NHS manages its resources badly, it puts in unnecessary levels of management and pays wages in extreme to those least entitled to it but not a deliberate mechanism by a government.
