School trips.

Yorkshire

Sat watching a decorating programme and it spurred a conversation about school trips. My friend is a Londoner and called it a ‘school journey’ (wtf) and I’ve learnt that he’s never brushed a sheep, wore a dunce cap or licked coal!!

What were your trips? Your worst/fave?

We went to Alton Towers on a train, allocated to the various schools in the County.

In my head it took 24 hours to get there on a blazing hot day to spend a few paltry hours mainly queueing for rides.

The worst part was the journey home with nothing to eat and a small bottle of squash to keep me going. Despite having a mouth like an sandy flip flop I sold the squash to a dying friend for 50 pence. Made up. Never been back.

On Holibobs

We went to Alton towers on a coach on our school trip and I go back twice a year for a nice weekend away

Worst was Germany at 15 and ot was sooooooo boring, rough seas on the boat trip home and we were all sick

The definition under the EIF is Cultural Capital.

My favourite was a trip to France. My worst was a walk around the next village looking at peoples front doors lol.

We used to have a week on a canal boat in primary school (final two years).

We'd do all the locks - even the Foxton staircase. The head brought a massive bag of booze which he kept chilled by bagging it up and trying it to boat.

Can't imagine the paperwork and risk assessments that would need completing today, for good or ill.

Twycross Zoo was our school trip rite of passage, a good day out when you were a little 'un.

Then when you grew up it was Bosworth battlefield, dull full dull, it literally was just a field!

A-level politics trips were great. Train into London, well known speakers at Central Hall, pub lunch, home.

Northerners are so weird.

My favourite trips were to chamber concerts/V and A/the NT. The absolute worst one was a residential farm one for a week where I fell in a canal.

We had day trips to Butlin's at Filey, Flamingoland, and a week's residential at the local scout camp, which was 20 mins from home

My best school trip was in secondary school. Three day outdoor activity trip, climbing, walking, abseiling etc

Worst was a trip to Grimsby fish docks in Junior school.

South Wales

I had a week at Stackpole in the last year of Primary School.

It was an outdoor centre and we did canoeing, orienteering (loved that), and all sorts of outdoorsy stuff. We slept in same sex dorms and it was quite a bonding experience as we stayed up late nattering. Loved it!

In Comp they did trips to France etc but i didn’t get to go on that as it would have meant being unable to pay for family holiday.

My boys have lots of day trips with their School (local history places) or they get people in to do demonstrations/talks/performances. In their last year i think they go away for a few days somewhere, so i’d best start saving

Chams or Socials

Oh the French exchange. So many happy memories - mainly involving wine, fags, Jim Morrison’s grave & hot wiring mopeds. 1991 was a fabulous year!!!
