Medication and sexual arousal need

I've had my anxiety meds increased and for a change in how I get aroused. Before I had a get up and go,rough and ready type of drive. And now I require more a mental and emotional stimulus. I was wondering if any on had a similar experience?

I think most depression/ anxiety meds have a bad effect on libido. Usually killing it completely.

A lot of them can do this. And I think citalopram is apparently the worst which seems to be the most common one prescribed.

I think it's a fairly common side effect of that type of medication. As you say though, taking care of yourself is more important.

I take 40mg of citalopram , it’s definitely not dulled my sex drive but if I’m not turned on enough it can take longer to reach an orgasm!

Jace took citalopram and it stopped her being able to orgasm. This went on for quite a while until she saw her GP . They were stopped and she was put on another drug. But here is the strange thing , and i tell no lie, once she had stopped citalopram, her ability to orgasm went to another level, and ever since , they have never been better. would be interested if anyone else had experienced this

Citalopram made no difference to my sex drive but Prostap injections & HRT killed it. Now had a total hysterectomy & HRT. T knows if i’m in the mood not to turn it down as it could be waiting ages before I fancy it again. I hate feeling this way. I love sex

Citalopram killed my libido dead. It killed my emotions dead if I’m honest, but it’s what I needed at the time. I was on it for 3 years, and it’s only been in the last 2 that my ability to become properly aroused has come back, but I still find it extremely difficult to orgasm without toys. It was never the most easily done thing, but now I don’t think I’ve had a full orgasm (the same that I get from a vibe) for about 6 years

Many years ago, I was briefly put on a course of Prozac. It didn't do much for my mood, but it did make it tremendously difficult for me to orgasm. No issues getting aroused or maintaining an erection, just couldn't quite cross the line. Super-stamina was a lot less fun than you'd imagine, for all concerned

I took seroxat for a number of years and I had zero libido.

Cost me a relationship or two, I feel.

They tend not to prescribe it any more - the feeling being that others are more benign in terms of side effects.

I’m clear in my own mind that they can definitely mess with sexual functioning in a number of ways.

I’m in citalopram and it’s not affected my libido, in fact it’s very high. Plus HRT as well and I’m like constantly horny x

It's a pain, but it's a very common side effect, and like you said, taking care of yourself is important. I need the mental health boost right now more than I need to feel horny, no shame in that at all. I wish you well and that things brighten up for you!

I was prescribed Sertraline but after seeing how it messed one of my friends up I chose to go without any. Therapy helped quite a bit though, I take 5HTP (Holland and Barrett) if I'm having a particularly bad day.

Have been on citalopram for years, am still horny as all hell and still come from my boots. Partner has been on sertraline for about the same time, same results. As for emotionally I can be reduced to tears by cute animal vids on Facebook.

The first time I was on citalopram my libido went through the roof. I hadn't had one for the whole of my 30's!!

But this wasnt a good thing . It was pretty much all I could think about. It took away my inhibitions and turned me into a monster. Once I realized what was happening to me I came off it.

I'm now back on it and a higher does. It's not really had an affect on it really. I think my libido is quite normal.

same as my mrs her anxiety levels have dropped way down she is able to think clearer and deal with the triggers before they build up to a attack

I would say it's possible, a lowered or dead sex drive is so common with anti depressants, it was the first thing to be affected for me. As always though, the best way to find out how your wife is feeling is to talk openly about it with her, she may have any number of reasons.

Sertraline has definitely lowered mine but then it was already a bit lower.

But what if gas done - completely unexpectedly - is give me a full mast boner all night.

I’m quite enjoying that aspect, but I no longer have the uncontrollable urge every morning. I need a bit more provocation.

I’ve just started on a mild beta blocker as well, no idea how that will affect things

Many, if not all, of the SSRI/SNRI medications can affect your sexual experience. They are, after all, modifying the levels of neurotransmitters in your body, that influence your mind's perception of your body and experience, as well as potentially how your actual body experiences sensations too. Some of these may be relevant to the ops condition.

Although most of these drugs operate in the same way, any one person may get side effects with one of them that are different to an equivalent alternative. Similarly, other people can have very different side effect responses.

Doctors will always aim for you to be on the lowest effective dose.which may also have lower levels of side effects too.

To try an alternative out usually requires slow, gradual dose reduction and withdrawal, before trying out a different drug instead. It's for each of us to decide, alongside our Dr, whether any potential downsides and risks are worth switching for, when an alternative may not be much, if at all, better than the current med. We could potentially lose the therapeutic benefits by switching to the new one, in an attempt to lose its side effects.
