I recently lost my dog and was thinking of getting another, however despite all the appeals for re homing dogs most websites seem to be very secretive on the dogs they have or are just poorly managed websites . They should just make it silly simple as it would make the process far more effective

Sorry for your loss

Do you have a Dogs Trust near you? Our local one welcomes visitors

Dogs trust advertise hundreds of dogs and are open between advertised times for visitors.

The only downside is that you can't reserve on line so it's first person to choose the dog has first refusal(subject to checks) so if you work and can only go weekends you might have to go numerous times until you find a free dog that you bond with.

You'll register when you arrive and fill In a form etc

Persevere though as it's worth it in the end

Why not just go into a rescue centre and see the dogs available for yourself.

"Why not just go into a rescue centre and see the dogs available for yourself. "

That's what I was wondering.

Surely you wouldn't just go by whatever is on a website?

Well yeah, you would. You see if there is a dog you like after reading the history of the animal, age, the breed. If you like it you ho visit the centre. I don't plan to just blindly go there just in case. That's the purpose of the website to make the process easier

The website is often out of date because the turnover of dogs is so high.

Don't think to yourself that you'll see a dog you like on the website and go down to collect it as it's not that easy.

You can't reserve them online so you've got to visit regularly (trust me I've done it a few times)

I think you are better off just visiting the dogs homes. Or look on the breed-specific sites if you have some favourites. Good luck!

Oo err Devon

Have a peek at many years dog rescue, they have all sorts and always alot coming in. Might be worth volunteering at a local shelter... You may have to wait to meet that special one... But you will be helping many others in the meantime x

What a fantastic comparison. Seeing what you like on a website, vs meeting them in real life.

The websites will be badly maintained rather than secretive, dogs will come and go all of the time and keeping the website up to date could be a full time job. As others have said, ho and meet the dogs and see which one wants you.

There is one nearby so as someone suggested will try help out, do a good deed and see what comes through. I am sure an extra pair of hands won't hurt

Op the websites will be badly maintained. Rescue centres have a certain amount of time between a dog coming in for a home and it going up for adoption for them to assess their temperment, health ect. Most of the time these dogs do not make it on to the websites as they are spotted during there assement time and tend to be reserved the day they are put up for adoption. Which is lovely that the spend the least amount of time in a shelter possible.

The dogs you will find on the website are the long term residents the dogs that are harder to find homes due to various reasons such as age (no one wants an old dog), the dogs that have issues sometimes due to abuse suffered from the previous owner, the ill dogs that require lifetime medication.

If you have a specific breed in mind, then dog rescues dedicated to that particular breed would probably have more info and pics on their sites of the dogs they want to rehome, compared to the more well known rescues.

I went to the local Dog’s Trust Centre and had a look around rather than use the website. The trouble with that is that you want to take them all home with you, and you can’t.
