ex nurse here..it's effectiveness isnt that incredible, companies merely adhere to it to bring down the reasons for 'sickness'..not saying it is'nt effective..but flu isnt always just one type of flu.I rarely have flu's, one/two a year(and last a day or two at most).

cheers I wasn't exactly asking for sympathy..just pointing out when people say "yeah, it's going around", I think...'well..i hardly caught the thing on my own ffs!'

I do love when people downgrade a flu though..to 'man flu'

regardless of sex, having a flu can seriously affect a workforce in short terms..as I said, doing a lot of manual heavy lifting isnt the greatest when you are aching and feeling weak (thats one of my main differences from a flu to a cold, the flu tends to affect the body more than a cold does, therefore I am with flu...so fuck ya).

I don't think that reply was very nice. Perhaps the person who said it was confused because you said you had several flu per year that lasted a day or two.

Influenza (or 'flu') typically lasts less than a week but the cough can last for several weeks. It does not go away in 1 or 2 days. Period.

Gastroenteritis -often called '24 hour flu' is completely unrelated.

Most people who claim to have 'flu' have nothing of the sort.

I know thew difference in having a cold or the flu for MY body,I barely take time off work throughout 20 years or so,I hate being off work and losing money(and I havent taken anytime off work because of this so far).

Hardly sniffles when I felt I could be incapable of carrying out my job, possibly endangering myself or others(not through just contracting the flu).

The point is that if you were really, really sick, with bubonic plague (or flu) or had no arms (lol) you wouldn't normally be able to pick up the fiver - unless you were a thrifty sort - say in Scotland or Yorkshire..

I personally would pick up a fiver with my teeth with flu

"Simple test Dr told me once. If you drop a £5 on the floor and you can pick it up. You ain’t got flu.

that makes utterly no sense whatsoever.

Think what he was saying is that if you’ve got flu you’re not fit for anything.

Flu’s a five day in bed jobby, you’re completely wiped out incapable of doing anything. Including picking a fiver up! Lol"

is there scientific data that says it's a five day in bed thing?

according to the cdc it can be from 3-7days symptoms wise(i dont think it ever says how long ppl will be in bed for)

When I get the cold, I merely have sinus issues..when I have a flu, i know my body must rest and generally feel much weaker.

I never said this is a bad flu, but it did impact my working, and it does spread fast(a good few of the workforce are already off)-I work in a minus c factory food environment I add.

CDC, what do the Yanks know. Fake news as DT would say. He knows more about flu than anyone.

3-7 days, I think my 5 day in bed diagnosis was bang in the middle lol

"You wouldnt be able to bend over or kneel down to pick it up if you had flu.

Not in our beloved town anyway

As said that carpet makes me feel like i have a cold.

Try not to look down as i walk across it.

"

I had to Google merseyway carpet. Is that the red carpet that goes into the merseyway shopping centre? Guessing it's not very clean...

As for the fiver and the flu.. One story I would love to hear from the op is why did you make the change from nursing?

no 5 days in bed was merely your opinion, nothing to do with the symptoms..therefore it is a null hypothesis.

I almost want to see it, because you make it sound like such a dreadful experience. But it's 150 miles away at least and I've never had a good reason to visit Stockport.

Strange to think that by the time I die I might have lived my whole life and there's still a bunch of places in the UK I heard of but never visited.

Possibly because he can’t even tell the difference between a cold and the flu?

A cold virus will certainly make you achey and shivery, this is your immune system reacting to the virus. When you have flu you wouldn’t be able to drag yourself into work even if you wanted to. In fact you feel as though you are dying and would happily let someone put you out of your misery.... and that’s a normally fit and healthy person.

well from my own personal experience a cold never stops me working, I never have other body issues with it.To me its a flu more than a cold.I struggled hard to to keep going through some exhaustive work(despite an hr into it thinking I should ask to go home(something very rare for myself to do). and I really just stayed knowing I was off the next night.

My nursing career was in the psychiatric field,if that makes me unqualified to give a general impression on my own health,so be it.
