I want to dedicate this thread to it as today marks an historic event, the berlin wall fell 30 years ago, on november 9, 1989. It was a moment that shocked the world and marked the beginning of the end of the cold war

I remember watching the scenes on the telly, What a moment in history! Seems crazy to segregate nations nowadays.

I have a piece of the Berlin Wall my son brought back from a visit. Not sure what to do with it afterall it just a lump of concrete but seems sacrilegious to confine it to the rest of the rubble

Is it really 30 years ago?

Only seems like yesterday. I reckon anyone with a line in knock off Levi jeans and Nike trainers, would have made a fortune that night!

How ironic that 30 years later so many people want to build new walls - literal and figurative.

On a mooch

Something I never thought I’d see growing up, it was surreal watching it fall, really doesn’t feel like 30 years ago

I expected the unified Germany would be the strongest nation in the Olympics - especially in swimming.

It didn't materialise though.

In fact they are actually less powerful than they wer.

It was an interesting program and the start of the fall of the wall began in the conference room, it was thanks to the reporter

We went to Berlin 2yrs ago. Lots of emotions whilst reading the info looking at the memorial and to think that this was in my lifetime and people were dying to get to a better life whilst I was trying to get into nightclubs. Very poignant. K

"

Many of those barriers are made of types of fabric. Let’s tear them down!

That's the most famous explanation for it. It's the end of their state-sponsored doping program. But I expect the advancement in West Germany would be able to compensate for it.

Another one most likely is due to less focus and more distraction I think.

To me, sports in the 70s and 80s are much more exciting.

Travelling

I remember as a kid watching an episode of the old Alvin and the chipmunks cartoon, there was an episode of the Berlin Wall that they brought down with music, in a dream. Because of that it has always stuck in my mind and I remember so vividly as a child about how big of a deal it was.

That episode was written, made, and aired almost 1 year before the real wall fell. Aired 1988.

30 years ago today.

President Reagan saying "Mr. Gorbachev TEAR DOWN THAT WALL

Fortunately 3 years later I got to meet Mr. Gorbachev.

4 years of Russian paid off.

He and his wife were wonderful people. Very friendly and easy to talk to.

I once sat on the last part of the wall near check point Charlie, until the man with the gun asked me to get down!

Meh, I'm not impressed with what they have done with their freedom.

Sure its good that they can all enjoy a western style life, but for a country that acted so poorly, they need to do a lot better. They could start by not propping their economy up with arms sales to saudi arabia, and stop letting America set up black site torture camps on their soil.

Stockport

It made me sad.

Heard the whole camp groan.

And not a single shot!

All that time waiting, training, and someone with a pick ax takes it out!

Would of saved billions in tanks if had known it would be that easy!

I'm not sure the UK can lead the field morally in these areas. We have definitely sold arms to Saudi and while we not have had torture sites in the UK, we have participate d in renditions.

How come in the 1990 World Cup Germany was still known as west Germany I’m correct in thinking the tournament took place over the summer 1990 just curious to know why the German national team was still referred to as west Germany

You are correct.

In 1990 european athletic championship, GDR made their last appearance. Here we see the rise of gorgeous and elegant Katrin Krabbe "the gazelle" won 100 and 200m for GDR.

The re-unification of Germany occurred on October 3, 1990.
