Would you recommend yours? Garmin or TomTom? I like having data left on my phone so "Just use Google maps on your phone" answers are not helpful, which is what I got when I asked somewhere else. Along with "The built in satnav in our car is very good." which is also an extraordinarily unhelpful answer.

local, but not too local

Hopefully not too unhelpful but my car has a built in Garmin Satnav which had live traffic updates. It was good but I did not keep up with the update subscription because Waze on my phone is much better in every respect.

Hiding in the shadows

My car has built in Pratt Nav.

But before I got this last year, I always used Waze, which has live updates & users can warn of accidents, incidents, etc

I use Google Maps whenever I'm driving anywhere I don't know and haven't had any data problems from it.

...Up on the Downs

Yeah, I have a TomTom with Live Update which is pretty good. Once in a while I find google on the phone can see a quicker way, I think maybe it updates marginally quicker, but most of the time they are exactly the same.

Waze is an avoiding delays & tailbacks app more than GPS. Crowd sourced Vs pushed updates. It wins every time.

I travel a lot for work approx 30'000 miles a year. I use the sat nav in the car which has live updates and speed cameras etc. It's ok but on occasion doesn't pick up road closures, diversions etc. The issue then becomes fighting with the sat nav to get back on track. I have found the using google maps as a back up works. Advice would be buy whichever is the best fit for you regarding ease of use, maps and the level of input it will alow. Some believe it or not won't use a full postcode and you have to search for the street manually.summary all singing and dancing can be just as useless as a cheaper version, check google as a short term fix hen sat nav proves NFFP.

I use iGo on an Android car head unit. It works without any internet but you do need to be connected for live traffic updates.

Unfortunately a lot of the traffic alerts tend to be bogus. It does give the option to divert around the traffic but if the traffic alert is bogus, it just takes you on an unnecessary diversion.

Waze requires internet access.
