Scam call....

Just a heads up that thar is a phone scam going around.

In short you get a message apparently from HMS tax revenue and customs about a tax fraud case in your name and you must push 1 to talk to someone or something like that.

And

If you don't do anything then a warrant for your arrest will be issued and you will be arrested shortly....

If you do get this call just hang up.

Maldon and Peterborough

If I ever get a cold caller, I ask them to hold on whilst I get a pen and paper - then just leave them hanging. They give up eventually.

Yeah I got this, and the same day I had a letter off HMRC saying I owed money from 2017...i crapped myself as I thought it was legit, but I rang the number on the letter as I was very upset, I asked why they had called saying I was being done for fraud, the guy said he knew about this scam and turned out I was due a rebate...the timing was bloody uncanny and I rarely get duped but it really upset me at the time, he said they target certain times of the year as well as it coincides with some tax accounting milestones where they send out letters, wish I had known though as I wound myself up a good un

I tell all cold callers they are breaching GDPR in phoning me for personal information. Never had one of them stay on the line to have it out with me, they all hang up.

If anybody wants you enough they will send a good old fashioned letter. I point blank refuse to give any personal info over the phone.

This happened to a lady at work. She was in tears. I had to reassure her she didn’t owe anything and help her ring the real tax office so she could be double reassured..... bless they really do pray on the vulnerable makes my blood boil. If they just put that much effort in getting a real job they’d do really well but instead.....

Definitely this

I've found as soon as you ask them to tell you anything about yourself they won't answer, claiming it's a breach in privacy...but you just cold called me & I've no idea who you are so why have I to give you my info?

If you get any asking you to call back with a number left on an answer machine, it'll be a premium rate number and they'll leave you hanging.

Be aware of email scams as well, I get a few every week as I open them. Try not to, as then they know the email address is active, just leave them in your inbox.

Seaside.

You were right to be suspicious.

I got this same type of call last Saturday morning, but luckily, I'd read about this Scam type call a few weeks before.

The style of the call is very good, sounds very official, and has an 0345 type Phone Number linked to it.

DON'T CALL ANY NUMBER SUPPLIED!

Because as soon as you do, the scammers auto direct you to a number in the Far East, which will instantly bill you for £350!

HMRC will NEVER contact you by phone, text, or email. They WRITE to you!

In the newspaper feature I read on this, HMRC commented they're well aware of varied scams involving their Name and welcome details of linked phone numbers involved via a specific Phishing contact Number they've set up.

I have actually had them phone me once when I was late filing my VAT returns. It was genuine because they knew the details and weren't asking for money.

I have had this tax fraud call several times too. I have always hung up straight away. It's good to have my instincts confirmed. I figure if they wanted to talk to me about fraud they wouldn't rely on me pressing 1.

You need caller ID, but while scammer is on the line you can add the number to the block list, it will also block withheld numbers. After 4 or 5 calls a day in less than a week I now get none.

Another tip is if you get a call from an 0345 or 0800 (or any number you don't know) DONT answer it, then once they've rang off put the number into google and if its a scam others will have recieved a call from them and there are a couple of sites which folks update scam numbers and comments on.

Put 03453003900 into google then go to the who has called me link and check the comments for this number

Hope this helps someone

In this case with the HMRC, the Scammers are based abroad, so any quoting of Data Protection or GDPR will have no effect on them as they're outside of being collared by UK fraud authorities.

If "Microsoft" are still calling because you pc is running slow

My fav is play along and sound really grateful coz they can help you with your slow machine when they ask for your operating system say you're on Mac OS10 (Apples operating system)

and when they go silent or say sorry they can't help

Tell them how helpful they have bee and how you really want them to carry on a fix your slow machine, and see how long it is before they hang up on you
