Why do we pay the price for a cup of coffee that we usually pay for a jar in the supermarkets?

Only got ourselves to blame s'pose

Last weekend I was away. I went to the garage and thought sod that I'll go without coffee.

Now two fifty is NOT a lorra money but for one cuppa ?

I HATE being ripped off.

On the way home I was sick as a pig.

I slept in the car in a Costa car park.

When I woke up I thought I have no choice but to pay for coffee.

I bought ONE standard coffee. One water on offer at 99p and ONE banana cake.

Nearly SEVEN quid! ffs ......

The woman in front of me had coffee n cake for four. It came to over 37 quid.. I said I hope you are staying bed n breakfast for that. She smiled at me like I was trailer trash.

Mind you .... I had just been sat in the car park throwing up .......

Anyone using the terms muffin and cup cakes should be put in stocks and pelted with rotten eggs!!!

I think coffee shops are a pub alternative, i meet friends and loved ones in coffee shops...yes they charges are a little expensive but i like em, always have done, always will....i wont go into Starbucks though as they are shit...Costa all the way for me please..oh and il have a large latte with raspberry syrup...fankoo

I know what you mean Granny, been trapped in similar situations when I was working away and had no choice but to buy over priced coffe and food and stand there getting ripped off.

I've spent a small fortune in road side/motorway services and Costa-lot coffee shops etc.

And here I sit in Starbucks making this coffee in front of me last as long as I can.

Hypocritical of me moaning I know but its either pay that or sit in me car and whinge about something else!

Coffee shops like Costa and Starbucks do intitially make tremedous profit on a Latte for instance....but operating and staffing costs, along with franchise costs for a top drawer coffee shop can soon chip away at that seemingly hideous profit margin....

I would sooner pay £3.50 for a decent coffee than £3.00 for a cup of filter coffee in a pub / bar / restaurant at the end of a meal.

However, my fb who is portuguese has major issues with the price of a coffee in the UK.

There is no coffee shop culture in Portugal - the economy simply wouldn't wear it, as every cafe / bar sells fresh espresso at 40p/50p a shot.

Can't see Starbucks business model competing with that anytime soon.

I hate it, they shut down smaller coffee shops so we are forced to pay for the mocha-frappa-double whatever. Ever go in and ask for a large and they say "err, its Grande, sir..." like you dont have a clue...

All I want is a coffee, suger, and not to have to get a second morgage for it...

Damn them all, my caffene addictions screwed now lol
