"Tell me more. You do it better than google. X" The award winning Philip Pullman trilogy; a coming of age story set in fantasy lands and parallel universes. Beautiful storytelling being retold with a sublime cast by the resplendent BBC.

"I feel like a little kid before Christmas! I can sense your excitement and it's getting me excited " I’m literally squirming in my seat waiting. Please let it be good! I want that escapist joy that comes with entering a world created with adventures and peril and good and evil, oh how I yearn for a rollicking adventure!

"I liked it, however I feel it underplayed the importance of the daemons. Even though it said it was a person's soul. Lots of people on screen, hardly any daemons." But great play made of the daemons at the coming of age ceremony.

"Far better then the movie so far, looking forward to the rest of the series." I think the longer form will help with the pacing. The film had to strip back too much from the story to fit the format. They decided to feature scenes with the big name stars and it suffered for those decisions.

"Loving it. Saw the Philip Pullman doc afterwards which had scenes from the film. Just confirmed how rubbish the film was and how good the series is. It’s a slow build, which is risky in the multichannel Netflix era, but I think it’s wonderful. I’m particularly enjoying Lord Boreal, or would like to (cough). " Ditto. Also

"It’s such a relief that they are sticking closely to the book unlike that rubbish film a few years ago. I can’t wait for them to get to Svalbard and meet Iorek Byrnison" The film was decidedly meh. It did feel risky tuning in for this. It was a Pullman interview that gave me hope.

I found Sister Clara's murder quite brutal. Adaptation are always interpretations and I suppose they decided this section could be truncated. It's always a risk watching someone's interpretation of your interpretation of another's work.

"It's a good adaptation. Bearing in mind it's pre-watershed telly, with a clear intent on worldwide sales, it's doing the book as much justice as it can." Actually this episode was purposely aired after watershed (bit just due to sports personality). It was due to the visible blood. At that rate they might have gone the whole 9 yards and shown the jaw being swiped off. Even the movie had that very critical part. I reread the fight sequence and the TV show duel really let the writing of the book down big time. One thing the movie did well was showing the brutality of that fight (just didn't have blood). The whole relationship with Lyra and Iorek is rushed. My largest criticism of the whole thing (and I do love the show) is that too much build up of Will is happening at the same time, when we should be getting more focus on Lyra's world. All of the Will stuff could have been done in episode 1 of season 2.

"I've not read the books but I am completely obsessed with the show. I do feel like it's moving very fast though and I'm missing out on loads of information!! I'll have to read the books. " Mrs and I were musing on just this last night. Book readers can fill in the gaps almost subconsciously. We did think it would seem fast paced and a little confusing for non book viewers.

The writing in the books is so good. Not just the content itself but words used and in such a way. I even found it good on audio book too. The one I listened to had multiple readers and voices for different characters.

"Have to be honest I think this has been poor, the first two episodes I enjoyed and thought it had promise but since then it's gone really down hill. What aspects did you find poor? " The middle episodes were repetitive, the amount of times I heard the line "we will get our children back" just became grating and it didn't seem to be going anywhere. The relationship with Lyra and the Bear felt unnatural and hurried, they became soul mates and she describes him as loving her but I don't see the events they went through together as enough to account for such a bond bearing in mind they had only known each other a matter of days, hours maybe? There are other things which I didn't like and spoiled it for me but they are the first to come to mind. I've watched it all as some episodes are decent overall. It just feels like it was made for kids to me, it doesn't feel like a fantasy epic for adults which I was hoping it would be.

Stand alone it was fine, but like all adaptions they made short cuts and failed to keep to the spirit of things. I have said it before, Will's back story should have been the first episode of season 2, not running along side Lyra's in season 1. The other world stuff is part of the mystery of her journey. It took away a huge chunk of time for character building from her. Lyra herself has much more attitude in the books. Maybe it's because I knew what happens, but it didn't seem to me they tried to be subtle (book pun!) in trying to hide the secrets and small twists that were big things in the book. Lyra's parents for example, far too obvious who they were in episode 1 and 2. As said, her relationship with Iorek goes much deeper and there is a connection between them that was rushed and barely seen. In fact Iorek's entire personality was watered down. It didn't show how proud but also ashamed he was of his heritage and past. The fight to the death, while bloody and had impact fell far short of the grace, majesty, and amazing writing of that scene in the books. It was rushed. To say I hated it and feel my time watching was wasted would be a lie. But disappointed in how it did eventually turn out is true.

"I think my daughter summed it up quite well. She came in while I was watching, and was struck that it was a BBC production and not a Netflix one. It was impressive for the BBC but... It was missing so much" BBC and HBO joint production. That's why it's impressive for the BBC.

"Loving the series. Never read Philip Pullman before but I think I’ll treat myself for Christmas! " The books are excellent. That's one reason why it's hard for any film or tv adaptation to live up to them. So far, given all the various restrictions, this has been a decent effort. It's not going to do Phil, HBO or the BBC's bank balance any harm, for sure.
