We weren't given the chance to play today, being hammered in the scrums meant we were always on the back foot. Ultimately though our guys have played a great tournament and I'm really proud of them.

Well done SA.

Ref was always going to be dodgy. He was dodgy against Wales.

Putting a Frenchman on against England in final was a serious question of judgement by those in authority.

Least he was notified that there is such a thing called TMO for this game but didn't know how to use it. Forward pass for SA last try ignored, even the crowd saw it.

As been said before, great world cup but will be remembered not for the right reasons.

SA united for a couple days a least.

Unfortunately playing catch up, it's a new thread and I haven't read the last one.

Last week we got beaten by South Africa who, I thought, played anti rugby. Just kicked the fuck out of it.

Same today?

Same pattern yes - stifling defence and brutal physicality for the whole 80 with a couple of tries in the last 20 mins

England had no go forward ball and hit a green wall constantly so couldn't play their game.

Same as they did against Japan and then against us. Squeezed the life out

Most definitely not game of the tournament......that would be the England semi or either of Japan's great victories.

England not 'shite'....just unable to get on the front foot due to Springboks power game

Lost....but no disgrace

I'd say so.

The South Africans had a great defensive game, but the constant playing for penalties isn't a great game to watch at all. Same can be said when England had Johnny Wilkinson and opted to kick every 5 seconds. It takes the flow out of the game.

Personally I'd like to see them do something to free the game up a bit more.

Today's match is a classic example of why League fans mock the Union game. Whereas the AllBlacks vs England match was a completely different game to watch (whichever side you supported).

Can't fault SA for their strategy, just makes a boring game is all, to watch, or play.

England have been on the front foot throughout the whole World Cup and always thought SA were perhaps the one team who could match them physically, which was the case.

Going backward in the scrums & not getting go forward ball in the loose like they have it was always difficult to see how England would react to & overcome that.

Unfortunately for England they didn't have anything to change that.

Not being able to play the French who bring similar physical game as SA maybe hindered there quest to win the Final

That's a shame because it's been a great tournament but this happens in finals in so many sports.

In the group games it's about getting better each game and in knock out its just about winning. Not the performance.

It worked for SA last week and again today.

I haven't missed much then. (Haven't seen any of the game and won't bother)

I think it was a brilliant world cup and Japan as hosts did an amazing job.

Teams will have to adapt (as they always do) due to the result and the way SA played. Not the prettiest or most enjoyable rugby but was effective against 'better' teams (more than once).

Overall it's been a great tournament, fun to watch and the team who had the best tactics won.

Only negative I can come up with is a shite French ref, but I've complained about him for years so nothing new there.

Watching the South African defence deal with a relentless attack from England 2m from SA line (around 66 minute ) was fantastic.

Had England anticipated the game may not go according to the script they expected, they wouldn’t have looked like rabbits in the headlights .

Yep agree on both points. That defence holding out was brilliant.

Watching England this morning did remind me of NZ a week earlier in terms of adapting to what's going on during the match.

I think that most of the kicking came from the English side. I actually don't remember a game where Faf passed down the line instead of endless box kicks.

To say that the Springboks "played for penalties" is also unfair. They ran in two tries whereas England got 100% of their points from penalties.

Naas Botha is very fond of saying "Finals aren't pretty". As for boring.... well if watching a world class scrum like that in action bores you there's always league and 7's....

When I complained about the ref someone on this forum said "no one really cares" I bet you care now

Not been on the thread much today so my two pence worth. SA deserved the win today. England have come out of the world cup with probably their strongest team in a generation. Not bad. It was an enjoyable tournament but not from the point of view of supporting my own team Ireland. We were shockingly poor and have been for a year now. I am delighted for the SA coaching ticket to win that world cup today as many are former Munster men. My Team. So delighted for Felix Jones. Great story for him. Now has a winners medal after missing out on even playing in a world cup with Ireland.

Also just to say thanks Boldy for starting up this thread at the start. It's been very enjoyable chatting to all you rugby folk.

South Africa were clinical and efficient , our ball off the breakdown was too slow and often inaccurate so we had no momentum, couple that with such a dominant scrum and it was game over.

England have done fantastic and so proud but SA had the answers to their game plan from the start.

People need to stop making excuses for them

They are professionals and the way they come across off the field is as important as on it and they did themselves no favours whatsoever there and will now be remembered for the wrong reason, being poor losers.

All in the name of showing a reaction?

How come NZ were so happy wearing theirs for finishing 3rd? They are used to winning the WC not finishing 2nd or even 3rd.

I firmly believe you have to learn how to accept defeat and be gracious in victory. Thank God England didn't win it based on that.

However. I've only seen two England players reject their medals. 10 seconds later, not on TV cameras, no/less harm done

10 seconds later, not on TV cameras, no/less harm done"

Mate you wouldnt have wanted them to win anyway so dont give me that crap.

It was not as if they were robbed No it wasn't it just showed that they are not happy with second best and that attitude will stand them in good stead for the future.Personally i was happy to see that reaction but Im sure in years to come they will be proud to have made the final.

If they can’t stand being second they’re going to have to seriously up their gamemanship or they will have disappointing International career ahead of them.

How often do they actually win stuff?

Personally how you lose says a lot about you. Being disappointed with second is one thing. But in the spirit of the game, their fans, fellow countrymen and opponents it’s just petulant and disrespectful. Sorry nothing about that said gracious in defeat to me. Sorry cannot agree with you i dont see it as disrespectful not wearing a medal that says you are a loser. It would be not to accept it but can fully understand the players attitude as i expect their opponents do too."

I’m not going to continue this argument but you obviously haven’t paid much attention to who England was playing. Go read a little about Siya and what he has said leading up to this final, about coming from a background where his biggest worry was where his next meal was coming from to being captain of South Africa at a World Cup. Even if they lost they wouldn’t have understood that mentality at all...

The two SA tries were absolutely brilliant to watch and the try count 2-0 underlined the Bok superiority. Warren Garland warned that after the New Zealand semi final that teams often drop off in performance. Eddie kindly reminded Warren to enjoy his 3rd place play off. Although they did not win the Grand Slam last time out they saw themselves as world champions elect in my view. Teams who are not humble in defeat often crumble because they cannot believe or accept what is happening to them. They were systematically taken apart ....

I think England’s final was against New Zealand and they couldn’t hit those heights again a week later South Africa stuck to their game plan and it paid off.My rugby knowledge is not the best so perhaps the more knowledge can help me out I know their are discipline issues but couldn’t Danny Ciparati and Chris Ashton improved the starting 15 If they had been selected in the squad in the first place. Is Danny too wild to tame ?

We know how much the Japanese regard honour and values.

I happened to see part of The One Show Friday night. They had Sinkler's ex PE teacher on saying how humble and respectfull etc he is.

Good on him btw for reaching the very top, almost, and coming from a public school, hard area background and staying on the right path.

I imagine he will come out and apologise for his rash decision same goes for Otoje.

Pretty much all bar one player had their medals off before the coaching staff had got theirs on. Those two got caught on camera as they were handed them, unfortunately they'll be the ones that get most of the blame.

If honour and respect are your thing, then surely you're supposed to keep them on till you get to the dressing rooms? At the very least till South Africa got their Golds.

So much for rugby players respecting the referees?

I'd have thought if the ref were that biased, which I'm not sure he was.. then it'd have been better to do it formally, after the World Cup is fully over? Put a case together rather than sulk like petulant brats?

Oh okay this sheds new light on it for me. I honestly thought it was just those two. I've seen one clip of the ceremony. Perhaps a team decision? Doubt it though.

Was it a protest against the ref?

Was he that bad?

I always coach my players that no matter how many mistakes the ref makes, the players will always make more.

I still think football could learn from rugby and other sports in regards to respecting the ref.

If there is any apology it will be generated from the PR machine. I am not sure that an apology is needed. It is what is it. I am sure the SA don't give a toss and more inclined to think Japanese people may raise an eyebrow. To put it in context. If Japan had got that medal can you imagine the pride and happy faces. It was about England expectation and the arrogance of the turn up and win mentality which worked against them once again.

To be honest I just think the medal thing was a manifestation of how humiliated they were.

While I think a lot of people here and elsewhere thought all England had to do was turn up and catch the ball I don't think the players felt like that.

With such a big background team of staff with professional sport, I don't think players are allowed to share the same mindset as press and supporters.

Other than Clive Woodwood I didn't see any other kind of sense spoken in the build up. He kind of suggested England would get steam rolled.

We haven't. I don't think we are supposed to. There's only 3.5M living here to start off with.

However, I don't think there would be that much pressure. I'd like to think we'd turn up and enjoy it.

Can you imagine us in a final omg how amazing would that be.

"Not wearing their medals was petulant and childish. It was not as if they were robbed

Apparently some people think they were!

Surely even the most one eyed English fan couldn't try and claim England were robbed?? They were totally outplayed and beaten fairly in ever aspect of the game. To say otherwise is embarrassing

That's what I would have thought too. Was reading some articles this morning showing quite a few tweets about England being robbed by forward passes.

Couldn't believe it!"

No problem with the result, we were playing catch up from early on, any optimism I had had gone at half time.

There was one, possibly two, forward passes in the first try. About half a yard forward, I think it was Marx and his hands definitely went forward in the pass. How it wasn't seen in the review I don't know.

HOWEVER, no way did that affect the overall result, SA deserved to win, no question about it.

Onwards to France 2023

Cummon guys! England have won the Cricket World cup and come second in the Rugby World Cup. That's not nothing! It's so hard for a team to put their best performance week in and week out. England played out of their skins to clean up the All Blacks in what I thought was the game of the tournament.

Should Jerome Garces be excluded from officiating at any future games?

I don't think I'm saying it in a biased way and certainly not saying it has really affected the outcome of any games.

You have to play the officials as well as the opposition, same applies to all.

Consider that the game is only 80 minutes in length and then, stop, start my nature. 6 minutes is a HUGE proportion of the time to be making mistakes. Especially since it probably only take a few decisions to swing a victory into a loss.

My feeling is that Jerome felt like the spotlight was on him for not blowing up scrum infringements and over compensated the other way. The same for bias against SA. He was so worried about being accused of bias against SA he was biased against England.

I understand now

I wouldn't say that. I would say that a referee of this calibre should not be in RWC reffing pools. It is almost as if World Rugby deliberately SEEKS the free advertising that comes with a controversial ref. It creates the hype that fills seats and imcreases the value of TV rights.

It's a conspiracy theory..

The ref won the world cup for South Africa.. startling news..

I am naive.. Ok previously believed it was because they outplayed them

England were shot like white fish in a green barrel and it's the refs fault.

Controversy generates interest.

Ten years ago the South African government was accused of corruption. Everyone called the accusers conspiracy theorists. Today the president of that government is being charged with "State Capture" estimated at a cost of R500 billion (possibly as much as a trillion). Imagine if that money had been ploughed into uplifting the poor, reviving the economy etc?

Imagine if that was plowed into rugby..

England would have been thrashed by more points

England were completely outplayed in a number of areas and couldn’t come close to matching SA for strength..

I like to think that England gave their everything against the All Blacks and had nothing left in the tank for South Africa.

England hold your heads up high. You didn't just beat the All Blacks, you gave them a lesson in rugby. Nobody can say that, not even the South Africans. I know it would have been nice to win both the cricket and the rugby but second isn't nothing either. Can't win em all.

One game too many for England..

Unlike soccer world cups in rugby it's the more astute teams that goes furthest.. SA had a job and they did it..

Other pointers we welsh must rue only losing by 3pts..

Also following their performances surely it must be only time before Japan are invited to join southern hemisphere championship..
