Hiding in the shadows

Kids grow up far too quick these days

Doing something like trick or treating has no age limit

Let them be kids for one bloody night

We took it to America! It just came back all commercialised. I think if 14 year olds are dressed up and behaving, it's quite nice them getting to join in on something childlike. It's probably their last chance at being a kid these days as they're all trying to be so grown up by 12 now! I actually want to go out and find all the teenagers now and give them a cuddle! Probably shouldn't do that, but I'll give them sweets.

I don't see tonight as about begging, misbehaving etc. It's a bit of fun and maybe a chance to break down some generational divides?

Honestly, as long as they want to. My mum told my I was too old in my last year of primary school and honestly, it broke my little heart. Kids grow up too quick, let them stay young as long as you can. Before you know it they're out drinking and all sorts and you'll wish they were small and innocent again.

Not had any kids knocking on my door so far tonight and I got a load of sweets in for it.

I was 24, a few of us had been to halloween party at the pub and at something stupid like half 12 on our way home, d*unk us thought it would be an amazing idea to dome some last minute trick or treating so any house with a light on we knocked at, needless to say we upset a few people but the last house we knocked at we seriously lucked out... they were only having a mega halloween party, didnt get home til 6 the following night

Kids round here only knock on doors if there is a pumpkin out.

Had some very well mannered kids up to about 14 knock. Luckily for me they are so well mannered they only take one bag of sweets for themselves which means more for me

America didn’t invent trick or treating and it’s very different there to here. It started over here, America just embraced it and kept tradition and it works better there with the general culture of open friendliness and community. We enjoyed taking our children there but don’t do it here as it’s so different. It seems to be very hit or miss here and too many people judge it and look down even while participating, it takes the fun out of it. There if you’re a grump and it’s not for you, you shut off the lights and no one bothers you, there’s a system and everyone knows where to go or not go. The ones who embrace it there are thrilled to see the costumes and children and it’s a great fun thing where here the majority seem to feel obligated and less enthusiastic. It’s just been brought back here in recent years in sporadic bursts and random areas. I’ve met people here who always did it and people who think Americans brought it over ( I’m not sure how we personally bring things over although people keep telling me I have lol) because we are greedy or commercial. It’s not about greed, it’s a day for fun and children.

We love Halloween. ( mr is English)We don’t have any trick or treaters here as we live rurally but if we did we’d go big and American style with it, full sized chocolate bars and fog machine in the drive and gushing enthusiastically over every little costume ( even if they’re 16!)

Few years back when it fell on a Saturday night we had all gone to bed about 130am had really heavy knocking on my door rushed down thinking one of the neighbours were having some kind of problem, handful of late teens early twenties all pissed up standing on my door step shouting trick or treat I shouted back fuck off and slammed the door on them. That’s what get Halloween a bad name don’t mind the little ones coming round but no joke when they are that age.

As long as they are being sensible and respectful I dont think it's much of a big deal, however it seems anything up to the age of 15 is socially acceptable. If it gets them out with their friends, dressing up having a good time enjoying their early years then why should we look down on them? We all want to be young again

Don’t think there is an age limit as long as they’re dressed up and being respectful.

Sometimes teenagers just like to dip back into their younger selves and Halloween is that perfect opportunity.

I'm not much of a fan for many reason's but the kids love it, let them enjoy it.

Also I LOVE seeing all the grumpy "American import" comments (here and other places) and I just think, do a little research and you will see other than the commercialisation of it, which as you point out came from involving the community, is utter bullshit. Trick or treat started in Britain and Ireland in the 9th century.

If the older kids are wearing a costume, they get a treat. I dont care, they could be out egging or doing other stuff. I give candy to the parents walking their little ones around and glow sticks for the kids to hang around their necks so traffic can see them.

Halloween is huge here, a guy even has a huge 30 foot dragon coming out of his house that he turned into a medieval castle down my street. And so many people do haunted houses and pumpkin patch games. It's just a fun way for adults to be kids again and for kids to have fun.
