Trick or treating

Do you take the kids? Do you like/hate when people come to your door?

I think it's a shame it doesn't happen so much any more, but I feel rude doing it. I only really know a couple of neighbours. My sister suggests do it but only go to houses with some kind of Halloween decoration up. What's the general consensus?

All I really had where i used to leave was teenagers in masks wanting money or fags

Get the odd one or two families now I think but I work most of it so wouldn't know.

I miss doing this with my kids, just about every house in my road takes part

They're 15 & 16 now, it's a bit uncool to wander round with 'the old hag' but they can now take their younger step sisters & brother out.

I get to stay home & pretend to be scared when others knock at my door

As long there is a pumpkin outside the house it's okay to knock! I go all in and dress up to freak the kids who knock on my door!!

Yeah, that's it. I don't want my wee one to miss out on the experience of doing it together, as I loved it. But people don't seem very receptive any more and I don't to be a pest.

Do people actually do the trick part ? I've always just known it that they need to have a joke ready to tell and then they'll get a treat.

Had an issue locally with teens demanding money, if they were refused they trashed front gardens etc.

I used to love answering the door to them when I lived at my mum's. Now I live in a flat so I don't get them. I loved seeing all their costumes and how excited they were. Most kids are so polite and will only take one thing and it was lovely to see the big grin on their face when I let them take more. Kids always need more excuses to be kids while they still can.

I agree! I was at Halloween discos tonight (primary school age) and they were just all so excited to show off their outfits and be out when it was dark. Adorable.

I don't dislike it, as Lacey said, the kids love it and you shouldn't deny that.

With that said, I hide away with the lights off and hope they pass by. After a long day I don't have the energy to fight my way past the barking dogs to answer the door only to find the kids ran off because they were scared of the dogs barking.

I used to love it when they were little.

I'll have a lit pumpkin by my door but we only usually get 2 or 3 knocks all night. That's if there's any sweets left by then

Yeah I can definitely understand some people not liking it. Although guising was a thing long before Anyone called it trick or treating, so I do know a lot of older people who'll stock up on their satsumas and monkey nuts and the kids make their night if they come and do a wee song or joke for them. I just don't live near any of them anymore unfortunately !

I think a wee sign or something you could cut out a newspaper and stick in your window to show whether you're ok with it would be good. I don't do external decorations but I'm happy with people coming to me.

I always overbuy on the sweets! I love it when the little ones come knocking.

I never liked my boys doing it when they were small, but there were a group of us all living in the same village with similar mindset so the houses we visited were pre arranged :D

Have always taken the kids trick & treating in our own road. They’ve been taught to be polite & only knock on doors that have lights on / pumpkin / Halloween decs.

Most neighbours joined in and a good time was had.

Now they’re older I’m hoping they will be on sweet duty but I expect they might just leave the sweetie tub on the step to save the knocking..

I'll be in an hotel in London tomorrow so won't get kids knocking at my door.

Even if I was at home, I wouldn't get them knocking at my door, as the driveway to the house is about 350 yards long through a wood, and to get to my door there's a courtyard with a locked door in the way

I'm of the age where Halloween wasn't a "thing" when I was younger - we were too busy getting ready for bonfire night - pinching wood and raiding other local kids wood from theirs to make ours better! Oh and making penny for the guy who'd eventually be thrown on top!

I'm here all the time and have been for 3 years. Its draughty, damp, the heaters are crap and it leaks but it's a wonderful building, it's huge, has stone window frames and most importantly, I love it.

We get groups of little ones on our street. The excitement in their voices as you hear them exclaim "they have a pumpkin!" is worth getting up off the sofa for, at least for one night. Plus, seeing their wee faces as I open the door screaming like a madman is priceless

My sister-in-law, being Canadian, absolutely loves Halloween. Sge spends weeks redecorating her house, has legendary parties and loves having trick or treaters knocking on her door.

At their old house they'd get in excess of 50 trick or treaters on the night, but they moved a couple of years ago, so it's taking a while for word to get around in their new neighbourhood.

I've taken my son out trick or treating - but wondering if he might feel he's getting a bit too old for it now.

Don't get many in my road - I think i've had two knock on the door in te 9 years I've lived here, but in the street across the way, most of the houses welcome Halloween visitors

The pic was done as a one off

Friends childrens mother ended up in a wheelchair that year.

So I dressed up as the pic and took all 6 of them out halloweening.

They had a really good night that night.

I still get some stick about it ever since

Pic wont last long up as will be deleted later.

Friends childrens mother ended up in a wheelchair that year.

So I dressed up as the pic and took all 6 of them out halloweening.

They had a really good night that night.

I plan to take my little one when she's older. I love Halloween but there definitely isn't as many doing it these days. I remember when I was younger you could knock and get an answer from pretty much every house.

I'll only take my little one to houses with decorations as that seems to be the thing here to give you the go ahead and knock.

I’m already in costume ready to have a little Halloween party at home and give out sweets.

I love it but then I am fortunate to live in a nice area where everyone is respectful and the kids only call on houses with pumpkins out. We also don’t get teens ruining it.

Hefty Hideaway

My kid is now too cool to partake in the old trick or treat. Instead she will be out with her mates whilst I give out sweets to anyone that says the magic words. When the sweets are all gone then I'll silence the dog with the unclaimed blackjacks and hide upstairs haha. I do miss trolling the streets with a little zombie on Halloween though.
