A mother and her 3 kids had 4 train seats reserved. When they got to their seats they found an old couple had sat in 2 of them. When the mother told them the seats were reserved the old couple told her "it didnt matter" and refused to move.

The train conductor moved the family to first class and left the elderly couple where they were.

Based on the information (because there may be more to the story) should the old couple have been made to move?

Is leaving them there while the family are moved some where else fair?

On the way back home from bristol once, the girlfriend and I accidentally sat in reserved seats for a scottish family. Rather than making a fuss the guy told us we could sit there as we were getting off in brum. They were a lovely family and a pleasure to chat with

Needs a bit more context but the seats were reserved so the old couple were in the wrong.

However based on how the mother initiated the situation does make a difference to how it all went down.

The old couple were clearly very rude, but how did the mother start the interaction? Was she polite and respectful, did she go in guns blazing?

I think the train conductor did exactly the right thing under the circumstances.. the family who were inconvenienced by the older couple sitting in their seats got an upgrade and the older couple got seats to sit in.. can’t really see what the issue is?... oh unless you had bought a first class ticket ,then let’s hope the 3 kids were well behave!! That’s a whole other issue!!

Yes they should, if there is a reservation service it's there for a reason. The old couple should be seated in the priority seating that is there specifically for the old and infirm

It doesn't say in the story. A suppose the conductor can only do so much. He probably wouldn't want to be the guy who moved an elderly couple.

If it hadn't of been on a train and let's say a plane, seats 1A & 1B, would you happily go back to aisle 68? Or front row tickets for Muppets on Ice?.. ...I doubt it highly. Granted the train is a little different as seats don't really differ, if I'd of booked with a table or required a plug socket, Mr and Mrs Horlicks, would be moving toot sweet.

It may be there were no other seats other than First class. If the old couple were being rude but the mother was not, they will have decided to not reward their rudeness (and stubborn entitlement) by moving them to first class.

As I said above a bit more context is needed for the feel and vibe of the situation. But the old couple were in the wrong regardless.

The old couple should have to move , if there’s nowhere else to sit then respect for elders should kick in and a seat given up . Might not be practical for children to be possibly sat on separate seats in a carriage. Needs a lot more context and details to give a valid opinion really

It sounds like the conductor used his initiative and kept everyone happy. The lady with the young family got to sit together to keep an eye on her kids and the elderly couple remained seated.

However, if there were no available seats in first class then I would expect the conductor to move the elderly couple, for two reasons. Firstly, they are in the wrong and secondly others are more likely to give up their seat for an elderly couple than a family of four.

I think the train conductor did the right thing. The family that were inconvenienced by people sitting in their reserved seats got a free upgrade and still got seats together. If he had moved the elderly couple he would have had to find them somewhere else to sit and it doesn't sound like they would have deserved the upgrade to first class if that was the only place to seat them.

There’s some very entitled old folk out there

When I’m getting on a bus I’ll let the old folks on first. One lady (who’s in her 50s, I actually know of her) literally shoved me and my fried out the way to get on first. So the bus driver wouldn’t let her on until she went to the back of the queue and apologised to us. She kicked off, reported us all to the bus company and wouldn’t get on the bus. Ah well

Based on this story, move the elderly couple, unless they have mobility needs and couldn't be sat elsewhere (including separately). You don't get a rudeness pass because you're old.

When I travel long distances I reserve my seat, often paying extra for the privilege. Reserved seats are clearly marked, these entitled pair just didn't give a fuck.

Tbf if I were the mother of 3 kids and the net result was sitting in first class and no doubt myself and all my kids getting the complimentary free feed for the journey, I wouldn't feel particularly hard done to.

Depends how old and in what health. Yes they should have moved and it does matter.

But if lady saw they were elderly then she should have done the decent thing. The conductor should have refunded them or moved to somewhere better.

What is the decent thing in these circumstances. I always wanted to be with my children when we travelled (I don't know how old these were) because I could keep an eye on them and in an emergency I would know where they were.

If they scrapped first class it wouldn’t be an issue. Trains overcrowded yet first class carriages half empty. Scrap first class and there’s enough seats for everyone most of the time.
