I am considering buying a BMW i3. Totally electric. Anybody got experience of owning an electric car ?

Of the smell Lecky cars I prefer the i3.

But if I could choose any - I'd live a tesla.

Don't depend on the range the battery says it has.

The technology is getting better all the time.

Those i3s are really funky to be in, I think the latest generation have much better charging capabilities than the first ones.

I loved my test drive. They are fitting a home charging thingy for me for free. I rarely do long drives, so would stop for a break, so can top up the battery at the service station then.

You can get the range extender model that basically has a tiny petrol motor in it.

It will charge the battery and can be used to (extend) your range.

BMW is stopping production on this. So if yiu are buying new I would haggle the price with the dealer.

I'd say a Nissan leaf makes more sense and is a better electric car.

A lot but to summaries the cost of ownership is much Lowe with the leaf as a rough number over £1k a year.

Nissan/Renault (they share their technology) not only have a better battery they also have a better system for ownership.

You lease the battery... So if goes wrong brakes fails or degrades past a point they will replace it at their cost.

Doesn't help you right now but a company is developing a car battery with a 1500 mile range. Should be on the market within a year.

Bear in mind it can take hours to sufficiently recharge at a service station to complete your journey.

My next car will be electric. I think we'll all have them in the near future

I sold my i3 9 month back, it was fantastic make sure you get the long range. Never had a issue with it you get bmw quality and reliability.

A family member has a Nissan Leaf and a fast charge takes around 45mins, so a 45mun stop after around 2hr driving is sufficient.

You have to be aware that the distances out of a charge will vary depend upon the weather, so in the summer you'll get more distance than in the winter in a charge.

The issue with nissan especially the leaf is the refinement, they use very cheap plasics and build quality is still on the poor side. My bmw after 80k miles still remained rattle free and typically new feeling, a nissan come 20-30k miles gain rattles and annoying old car noises.

Owning one really shouldn't be an issuse these days. Poundland sell 10 AA batteries for £1 and poundland is everywhere so you'll be ok.

Ask how long the lifespan of a battery is how much it costs for a replacement battery. Then you will have your answer.
