Ok first strip then dip

After the acid has eaten the rust salvage the little bits left , buy a lot of sheet steel a hammer and roller and laboriously re craft new panels tack weld old bits to new to retain authenticity .paint

Re build and enjoy in approx 14 years time !

Dont bother.

Total waste of time unless...

...you have a large garage

....money to burn

...all tools

....mechanical/electrical/fabrication/knowledge and skills

...no sexlife

...no life

...want to lose all your current friends

....Have nothing better to do.

More rust and holes than you’ve ever seen.

I’ve just converted a modern van to a camper van a 2011 Vivaro It took a lot longer and cost far more than I thought And there was nothing wrong with the van

Good luck

Oh! Have fun!

expect a money pit unless you got all the skills and even at that you'll probably replace the suspension, brakes etc which can be costly on vintage or classics.

Expect to find rust & chase it all over the van.

I've had a few that started as a bubble of wing rust & turned out to be complete rot boxes.....grinder, welder, steel & hammer + many yrs on.....still not finished or anywhere near it.

Is it a coach built or a panel van conversion

if it's coachbuilt and there is damp in the body that is easily sorted if you are a little bit handy with a tape measure a saw and some plywood

80s VW vans aren't exactly known for their rustproofing lol good luck you're going to need it

What is it?

I used to have a bodyshop, we specialised in vw campers

We started with a tear down, tack welded braces in and the full body was acid stripped before all welding/lead repairs were done and electro 'e coated' to prevent any rust returning.

I think if you haven’t started it yet have a think about what you want to do with your time looking at your profile you seem to spent loads of time out and about

Have you ever seen a roof tent ? For your car

I chortled at that , but they are great inventions, to camp out on the roof, ingenious idea. Can't live in one for any length of time though, for obvious reasons.
