"We all use unisex toilets all the time. I have two unisex toilets in my home. I have used unisex toilets in many coffee shops, educational establishments, small businesses. They are just called a toilet, usually with an individual wash hand basin in the same room, proper walls and proper door. In fact it is the standard idea of multiple cubicles in one room, with flimsy walls and door with big gaps top and bottom, and in gents toilets a row of urinals with men looking at each other, that is disgusting. As far as the children issue, which would you rather have? A separate bathroom that your child can use while you wait outside? Or parent sending opposite sex child into toilet block where other people may be (women can be predators as well)? School toilets? Maybe some of you have recollections of these being safe spaces because of segregated genders? I remember them as places where bigger boys could bully smaller boys because they were "private spaces" where female staff (the majority of the teachers) would not go. That were perfect for physical and sexual abuse, larger child, or gang of children, against smaller child. They should bloody well be illegal! Thankfully most new or modernised schools are installing single occupancy properly private bathrooms, with door into a public area, totally eliminating this type of assault. You want separate male and female changing rooms? One big open room for all the vaginas, one big open room for all the penises? Ever heard of gay men, lesbian women? Personally, i would prefer a bunch of single occupancy changing cubicles, single occupancy shower rooms(with proper door, not a flimsy curtain), and a shared area with lockers and a bench to sit and put my shoes on." Single cubicles/ rooms, not multiple ones.

"Not a problem, as long as the cubicle walls & doors were floor to ceiling. And guys didn't piss everywhere, leaving the place smelling rank.. To be fair, I've seen some horrific women's bathrooms. This is true.." Reminded me of the school where the girls would use the bathroom to put their lipstick on, then kiss the mirror, leaving it covered in lipstick. They got caught and made to watch the cleaner cleaning the bathroom. He took his mop and washed the floor, them used the mop to clean the toilets, finally using it to clean the mirrors. The lipstick problem went away the following day.

"We have a mix of single sex and unisex toilets at university. The unisex toilets all have their own sink inside the cubicle, and no urinals. There's no door to the toilets, just cubicle doors, so it's very open plan. I don't know anyone who's uncomfortable with using them. And particularly for ladies at that time of the month, with more women using things like mooncups, having a sink inside the cubicle is very handy! But anyone who isn't comfortable using them can just as easily use the single sex toilets. My eldest son went to a school that only had single sex toilets and experienced quite extreme bullying and the bullies' favourite place was the toilets because nobody could see them. He's been home educated for the last 2 years because he couldn't face going back to school after that. So, done properly, I'm a big fan of unisex toilets. We have unisex changing rooms at the local swimming pool as well and that works brilliantly. "

So you would be absolutely in favour of private single occupancy toilets with proper walls and door, wash handbasin, drying facilites. The issue of whether that toilet is sometimes used by persons of a different gender should be of no concern as long as all persons (of whatever gender) maintain the cleanliness of the facilities.

"So far, i have never been on an airplane with gender segregated toilets. But presumably the rules are different when pissing a mile high in the sky..." Airplane bogs suck out the entire atmosphere of the cubicle every time that toilet flushes though. Taking with it all oxygen, poo vapour and offending, steaming shit - in the flash of an eye! And nobody can really hear you dropping your guts over the noise of the engine at that height. If every public loo was like that, I'd be happier with unisex toilets

Mostly i think it's because of the urinals (vile concept, pissing against a wall?). Possibly also less care in cleaning and making it a fresh nice place - there's a services on the M5 where the ladies always has fresh cut flowers next to the wash basins, the men's is just functionally clean. In pubs/clubs - anywhere that people get d*unk - i have seen nightmare horrific toilets of both genders - d*unk men do not have the exclusive licence on completely missing the toilet bowl...

"I biggest issue is with the implementation of gender neutral toilet facilities. If it’s a floor to ceiling, enclosed cubicle with hand basin, then I’m ok with it. Not enthralled about stepping in piss etc but hey ho. The problem with implementation is that signs on doors are simply being changed, not the facilities within the toilets themselves. On Facebook today, a review of a music venue in London: Unfortunately I won’t be returning, due to the fact that there are no female toilets. There is a “gender neutral” toilet space which is comprised of open plan urinals (which you can’t avoid seeing) plus a number of stalls which females can use. It is essentially a male bathroom. If this was “gender neutral” then all the toilets would be enclosed in cubicles - something I am not opposed to. I had to wait in a stall for 10 minutes for a group of men to leave - they were sniffing and being loud / intimidating and I didn’t feel safe enough to walk out into that atmosphere. I can’t support a venue which doesn’t value my safety or privacy. Otherwise a decent space." Quite right. That wasn't a gender neutral toilet space, that was a club owner spending five quid on a new label for the gents toilet door. And along the way giving a bad name to the whole idea.

"Yes please! They make things so much easier for those of us who don’t identify as one or either of the binary! Why does it make it easier?" For those who do not present themselves as clearly male or clearly female, choosing between gendered toilets can be difficult. In the US, under trump's "trans hostile" policies, there have been more than a few instances of non-trans-women being confronted with hostility in the ladies bathroom. One case comes to mind where a male security guard followed a slightly butch looking woman into the ladies toilet, demanded to see proof of her gender, and when she refused he physically assaulted her and dragged her outside. Then we get trans men who look like lumberjacks, being told they must use the ladies because their birth certificate says female...

"Yes please! They make things so much easier for those of us who don’t identify as one or either of the binary! Why does it make it easier?" Just like Polly said, I don’t identify is either so to use gendered toilets feels like outing myself or making a choice that isn’t true to who I am. If they were gender-neutral then it wouldn’t matter. Being non-binary/genderqueer doesn’t need to be a big deal and like other people in the thread have mentioned, a lot of countries and our homelives are already set up like this x

"That depends on a couple of things. I've used mens loos in the past when the line for the womens seemed about a mile long. Is it actually an unwritten law that men must piss all over the floor and loo seats, take a dump and not flush? Because that seems to be a common theme. And don't get me started on the smell! Womens toilets rarely smell half as bad as the gents. I have no problem with unisex toilets, if only guys weren't such messy smelly buggers. " Perhaps what we really need is two sets of toilets. One door marked "toilet trained". And the other marked "stinky dirty buggers".

"Do you think gender natural bathrooms should be a thing? Yes or no, and why? " They are vile for women, sadly many blokes particularly if they go in as part of a group just don't know how to behave. Because the rest of Europe does it, doesn't mean that we should. Mr Shady.

"I would not use them and wouldn’t want my daughters too either , an 18 girl doesn’t want to be doing her business with some fella listening!" Why though? My 18yo daughter wouldn't think anything of it! Most beach toilets down here are mixed gender now plus she's been brought up not to think anything is different ... surely makes no difference who's listening?
