Absolutely not! Lots of amazing music in the 70s, in fact it might be the best decade! I don't think there is a worst decade for music, there's good and bad in all of them.

There and to the left a bit

Let's see OP - the 70s bought us:

Disco

Punk

New Wave

Two Tone

Rap

Glam Rock

To name but a few genres that included some awesome bands/songs

The 80s bought us:

The rise of manufactured music e.g. Stock Aitken Waterman

Hits by Lena Martell, St Winifred's School Choir, Spitting Image, Black Lace, The Tweets and more

70s don't sound so bad when you put it like that does it?

Reply privatelyReply in forumReply +quote

By (user no longer on site)

No way!

So much variation!

Bands from the late sixties were still going strong, The Who for example.

Glam Rock, Disco.

Rock was really taking off...

Late seventies, the SKA and Mod revival. Madness and the Jam for example.

Yeah, there was some crap stuff, but probably far less than we have now.

I don’t think I can actually make a top ten, as soon as you’ve made a list you realise you’ve forgotten such’n’such but here are a few that spring to mind.

CCR Travelling Band

Looking Out My Backdoor

Faces Stay With Me

Rory Gallagher Crest of a Wave

Eagles Desperado

Free Alright Now

SLADE anything from the SLADE back catalogue really, I could listen to them on loop all day long

Hope there are one or two in there that do it for others as well.

I was at my most musically impressionable in the 80’s and was 24 when the decade ended. There were some great stuff in the early part of the decade but the second half was pretty poor.

The 70’s gave us so many different genres and sounds and those genres seemed to fade in the 80’s, the decade when music became more manufactured than ever before and as a result lost a little bit of magic.

You only have to look at someone like Nile Rodgers to see how the 70’s continues to influence today.

For me the 70's experience was the subculture known as Northern Soul. Which was mainly obscure artists from 60's black America, who were trying to make it big in the soul music business. Unfortunately some of them never did and their demo records were forgotten, only to be rediscovered by English DJ's who wanted to find rare music to play at packed out all-night venues here in the UK. So for me the 70's was a great time for music.

Some fantastic lists here..70s were colourful, eccentric years of fashion and music , such a vast array of sounds and so many had their fashion styles to match...wish it was still around in some respects. ..the streets were awash with colour and great sounds...and as evidence to the strength of the sounds just think...many of these bands are still touring..how many from the 80s onwards have actually stuck around..great days

I'm the same - there was a time when they were the band I had seen the most live - then they went "reggaeoke" and I lost interest after they milked the Labour Of Love thing to death - that said Promises & Lies was a fairly decent album.

My inspiration for this forum post was watching Sounds of the 70' it was a Prog Rock special and made me think with all the great bands of the 1970's Prog Rock and its pretentiousness let the decade down.
