"Depends on the situation in my opinion.

Depends on circumstances!

You can't apply a set rule for everything.

If you never use gut feeling you don't learn.

If you don't give people benefit of the doubt, you have trust issues.

Yes. I don't totally write someone off over my initial impression but I've had many situations where I've ignored my gut and wished I hadn't. It seems to be right 99% of the time.

Yes, too many people will ignore the difference between words and actions.

There's a guy (whose name typically, I can't remember) who does talks on this stuff. He starts by asking who's left their kids with babysitters, then asks who isn't completely happy about the babysitter, then says "what are you doing here? Go home".

La la land

Gut instinct for me is a double edged sword. I actively try to find fault due to past experiences. If I listened to my gut I probably wouldn't get out of the bed in the morning. So I try and be more logical rather than go with my gut

It is there for a reason. The way people handle themselves speaks volumes.

If something doesn't feel right then there's usually a reason for it.

If your gut is screaming there's something wrong, surely it's not a good idea to give them benefit of doubt.

Or do you mean it's a no win situation?

The gut is natures way of telling you to get the f outta there or be cautious.

I always trust my gut. As an ex soldier while on tour my gut has my life more than once so i listen to what it tells me and continue to do so.

Your instinct combines everything you see, hear and feel into one thing and once refined is very rarely wrong.

Central

Gut instinct is helpful but for many things it's limited. Often it's useful to use our rational mind to evaluate what we know - including gut feelings.

Certainly if someone hits me strongly as wrong for me, it's quite unlikely that I'll reach a conclusion that they have promise.

Sometimes we may repeat patterns that aren't the best for us, because our gut instinct may be comfortable with someone who's similar to others that we've known. Their familiarity may seem less unsettling than someone who's very different but possibly groundbreaking for us.
