Car Advise Needed

Bit cheeky posting here but any advise will be appreciated.

We have an intermittent problem and getting more frequent where the car just loses power (usually when in traffic or going slowly) and the revs will not go over 3000. The car still move albeit slowly so can park and then attempt to restart the engine. We often have to try this 8, 9, 10 or more times before the engine kicks back into life and will fully rev.

When this problem happens we get an engine management light appear on the dashboard.

This is a 2.2i Automatic SRI 07 plate.

We had thought that keeping the Sport button pressed in traffic would help and keep the revs up bit it has also happened when we tried this.

The car has been survived and filters, oil etc changed.

Any help would be appreciated

And if there is a local mechanic who can help even better ;0)

sounds like it’s not getting enough fuel had same problem with a passet it was injectors

Hi this could be anything although air mass meter would be a good point to start try to unplug it when the fault is happening on some vehicles when this makes a difference. If you were closer I would happily scan it for you

Faulty EGR valve may cause this. Did on my 2.2 Vectra

With engine light on it will have a code in ecu to tell you what it is. Buy a cheap code reader off eBay

EGR is an easy job to replace yourself and it is simple enough to get some electrical spray cleaner to clean off the MAF sensor.

Is there any smoke coming out of the back and if do what colour is it?

I’d ask around locally for a mechanic that’s trusted. You might be able to diagnose the fault with a cheap code reader but unless you intend to replace the parts yourself, the garage will want to do their own diagnostics

First thing (and cheapest) would be to give the MAF sensor a quick clean. A dirty sensor could effect the fuel air mix and give you the lack of fuel.

My car did this and it was the turbo actuator sticking open

This is the most sensible suggestion so far. Your car has a fault, the ECU is putting the car in to limp mode and reading the code will tell you exactly what is up. It’s probably a sensor, but at least you will know which one.

EGR valve replacement was a less than a 5 minute job recently on my old Astra. New valve was under £50 I think. Car running fine but dash light on so MOT replacement.

Found a pedal test online so that I can see the error codes. I got three, each of which could be a couple of issues.

how long is a piece of string, take it to a trusted local indy, not a main dealer, guessing on the internet wont help, it could be a hundred different things, so im afraid its time to get out the credit card sorry, btw 30 years in the trade, andy

get the throttle body cleaned with carb cleaner,take the air cleaner off,start engine,keep the revs up a bit whilst someone squirts bursts of cleaner into the throttle body and on the butterfly flap
