"troll what is that ?? ok i am a bit thick so you have to tell me here , "

In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into a desired emotional response.

Newcastle and Gateshead

depends on what you mean by "troll"

I may not agree with every post on a subject... but people are certainly entitled to one...

if you disagree with something... say why...back it up

the world would be a much more boring place if everything was fluff and people agreed with everybody on everything.

Do remember a troll is not some who doesn't agree with you.

Their postings tend to be pointless, or criticising your view without offering their view, pointing out spelling/grammar/typos, going over what has already be said.

A troll is not someone who try's to post witty reply or comments, they are just lonely.

Nope. That is not a troll in my understanding.

A troll is someone who finds a thread in a community forum. Let's say for a deceased person. Then amongst the condolences they say something vile about the person.

Another example can be a charity site for sick children and amongst the well wishing threads they write a contribution saying that these ill children are a waste of space and sap society etc....

The usage you give is another example of people using a word to describe a far simpler less benign behaviour.

Saying someone whose humour you don't agree with is a troll is like saying a comedian you don't like is really an anarchist trying to get the nation to kill each other.

Trolls intend harm. They KNOW what they are doing.

I agree with all of what you say though except the lonely bit. That's a misconception. They can be very socially active, fully employed, with a partner , children etc....

Portraying them as 'sad lonely' people is giving a reason for their behaviour.

It's akin to the 'man in the brown mac is a perv' syndrome.

It can be ANYONE. Generally I find it's the finger pointers who are most guilty.

A troll doesn't have to be someone posting malicious messages designed to hurt. It can be someone simply deciding that they don't like what is being discussed by people who enjoy discussing a particular subject and so decide to interject a pointless banal message into that thread designed purely to disrupt.

..and then quote 'freedom of speech' when reprimanded about it.

Interesting read. Brief reading originated in Norse Mythology and ended with a list of the Top Ten Internet Trolls ..... some of em quite clever and inventively anarchic in their deviousness.

My understanding of troll was someone who post to purely provoke a response, it has nothing to do with their actual point of view as they will even post something that is the opposite of their true point of view if they feel it will provoke a response

I guess what would of been known simply as an attention seeker pre internet

I believe the thread was started in response to someone making an asinine comment on another thread.it didn't add anything to the thread it was kinda 'so what? i'm not interested'

It is a genuine question. I dont generally post a lot, but do like to read the posts on here. There seems to be a small pocket of people who 'troll' reguarly and who do get up peoples noses, which is obviously their intent. I do find some of the 'left field' thinking interesting as it does put a new slant. But 90% of the time it just seems tedious.

So what ? Is not being a troll. Far from it. It's simply showing an indifference.

Before anyone says they shouldn't post - of COURSE they should.

I find it's the people who get indignant and choose to be offended whose behaviour is more questionable.

I disagree Granny. If a group of people discuss a subject on a thread that they all clearly ENJOY discussing then why should someone else have the right, under freedom of speech, to enter that discussion when they clearly have no interest in the subject being discussed or contributing positively to the thread, and choose to post someothing derogatory, nasty or just plain pointless 'just to give themselves a voice'.

It's like someone running into a group meeting of Slimmer's World, yelling, "Fat cunts!" and running out again.

The last troll I saw was hiding under a bridge suffering from agoraphobia because these goats were bullying him and kept kicking the shit out of him.

The goats didn't care that they were trespassing on the roof of his bridge, stomping and trip trapping which was knackering the timber roof.

The poor troll only asked who was trip trapping over his bridge and the bastards ganged up and called their old man in to give the troll a right pasting and knocked him off his own bridge!

Last I heard the troll was sueing for physical and mental abuse.

Trolls dont care about the opinion they are giving, they just want to cause a row and get off on that...for example i am on a small left wing forum, people are entitled to debate but when someone joined and called themselves "Hooray for the blackshirts" and posted on every thread how Mosely had the right idea they were not looking to join in a debate.
