I'd struggle to name a better horror than the original Halloween OP. It's pretty much flawless.

That said, love the performances in the Shining, and the first 20 minutes of the original nightmare on elm Street are hard to beat for sheer gory tension

My daughter and I watched Halloween last night. Still gave me to heebie jeebies. It's aged well.

As a rule I don't watch horrors however I do love House of 1000 corpses.

There are some really good suggestions above (esp. The Shining, The Thing, 30 Days of Night and the original Halloween).

I'm going to nominate The Crazies (2010, not the 1973 original). I think it's a really well crafted sci-fi horror with a decent story, great acting and excellent camera work.

Pans Labyrinth as well.

Another for 'Get Out' a great modern horror.

Forgotten classic, anyone ever saw 'Vamp' it had Grace Jones in, a funny horror story with great storyline
