I was in Tesco today and was thinking of trying some vegan sausages. Two sausages were £5-00 which was £25-00 per kilo.

Tesco's so called finest pork meat sausages were £5-50 per kilo.

As a comparison rib eye steak was £19 per kilo.

That is just the biggest rip off ever. Vegans (I am not vegan) are being totally ripped off in my opinion.

I might not agree with vegan activists but I don't like seeing big corporations taking the piss. Rant over

So called healthier options are usually more expensive. Like 'organic' which has never had a clear definition.

I worked with tobacco. One brand was defined as 'fine cut' to warrant charging more. It was all finely cut!

It's probably a case of development costs spread over anticipated sales. If low sales are anticipated they need a higher price to recover the development costs over a reasonable period.

Sadly it's all about fashion and profit.

Used to be able to buy the Linda McCartney stuff for the same price as the meat version for most things.

But as its becoming more fashionable to eat meat free meat looking food they ramp up the price.

Why it has to look like meat versions is simply a psychological trick.

"I'd never go vegetarian because I like chicken or bacon to much" is easily countered by having meat free foods that look like meat and almost taste the same due to additives and flavourings.

It then becomes "well if it looks like what I already eat and its healthy then ill switch over" and people ignore the cost because "healthy and helping the environment" is all that sticks in their head.

I'm not totally convinced by that argument.

Fizzy drinks were developed sometime ago, and their sales are huge.

Yet they still often cost more than petrol a litre. I'm pretty sure I know which is more expensive to produce.

I just checked online. It's called the Beyond 2 vegan sausage line. 200g is fiver and so £25 per kilo.

Admittedly there are much cheaper non meat versions but the Beyond 2 is big on packaging and being given a very prominent display.

If you go on the Tesco site you can get a breakdown of ingredients. There Beyond burgers are £22 per kilo. More expensive than their sirloin steak.

The ingredient breakdown includes the preservatives. The packaging size is because they are preserved in a protective atmosphere...

Looking at the ingredients I would probably prefer to try cooking a homemade vegan meal.
