An 0300 number rang me earlier to tell me I owe £462 in tax fraud money , and if I dont pay it I'll be arrested in 30 minutes .

That was 2 hours ago .

But my point is that some people may fall for this , so warn elderly relatives of this please .

Thankyou

that scam has been doing the rounds for a very long time. I don’t answer 0300 numbers and block them on my phone. It’s not just elderly people who might fall for it op.

By buying phone numbers from companies and hoping they can recoup their losses through scamming.

To clarify are you complaining about having to wait in to be arrested.

In reality, a very serious issue.

These cunts ! Are at it so much. The shite that they spout.

O I believe you have been involved in a road traffic accident. - no I havnt now fuck off

O would you be interested in a cheap coffin.- no. I’ve no intention in dying unless I die in a road traffic accident in which case you’ll be calling me to make a claim

You have £2000 waiting to be claimed on a tax over payment. - yea like fuck I have.

Your phone has been hacked and all your personnel details have been taken but luckily for you we have intercepted the information and for a small fee we will secure your data - ok cool before you do that could you give bigtom69 a call and let him know I’ll be right over to duck his cock.

I got a call one day from a number which exactly matched my own banks phone number

The person calling said they were from my banks security department and sounded very professional and told me there was a discrepancy with my account and I may have been the victim of online frauds.

They then said, for us to move forward with this can you provide me with your full name, address, account number and sort code.

Red flags straight away I said to them. Yes no probs but can you call me back in 10 mins as I'm at work right now ? They said of course. I then hung up and called my bank straight away and they said, no it wasn't us, we wouldn't ask for account details over the phone and would go through a series of security questions with you.

Luckily I spotted the red flags, but I did wonder, if that was some vulnerable elderly person, would they have been as vigilant?

Costa Blanca Spain...

A couple of years ago we had a spate of calls in Spain from "Microsoft Helpdesk"

They were targeting English speakers with tales of compromised security Etc. And wanted you to access your Microsoft account. How they knew we were English just from a Spanish phone number is beyond me.

They were so fucking amateurish that the calls didn't last more than a few seconds before they got the "fuck off" but they just didn't give up. On one day they must have called us a dozen times.

I've had a few over the years, they're constantly trying new angles to get at your hard earned money.

Had a woman on the phone a couple of years ago, offering a will writing service. Declined obviously as that was sorted out a long while ago. Questioned her as how she had got my name and number as ex directory, and on restricted electoral roll. She told me that they (whoever she was working for) purchased lists from a marketing company. After a few threats of legal action for breaching the Data Protection Act, she gave me the name of the marketing company. Quick Google and I was speaking to "the MD" (in reality probably a one or two man band). Read the riot act to him, and assured him that if I ever received another such call then immediate legal proceedings would be instigated. Never got another one of those.

It's so shite. And I imagine there's more people than you think that would fall for it.

My friend got an email a few weeks ago, someone hacked into her email and got personal information and then contacted her on Facebook saying he had been watching her on cam and recording her while she had been watching porn and then listed the names of her family and friends he was going to send the video to. It was pretty convincing and she was going to pay him £250ish until we all told her not to as nothing will come out of it. I despair at times.

Others I've had:

Timeshare "Ombudsman" about miss selling of Timeshare (yes, I do have a Timeshare, but if I didn't want it, I wouldn't have bought it).

No such body as Timeshare Ombudsman......goodbye.

PPI....if I had it, there's a reason why I had it, and why would I pay somebody a large commission to do something which is relatively straightforward to do anyway!

No fault motor claims.... I just tell them I'm currently assisting the MIB (Motor Insurance Bureau) and the SFO (Serious Fraud Office) in investigations into fraudulent claims handling, and ask them to state clearly their name, position, contact details, and registration details of the organisation that they are purporting to represent.....for the purposes of this recording. Funnily enough, never have got past the bit where I mention recording!

I'm sad I know, but it amuses me

I've had that one 3 times now.

What I don't get is why, after being unsuccessful in conning me the first time, why they think I might fall for it another time.

The first time I got the call, I was in the car (hands free) and because I was concentrating on driving and where I was going, rather than just hang up, I let the thing connect through to a person.

Of course, by then I'd twigged it.

By the way, there is a brilliant video out there of someone really winding these people up, speaking with a Russian accent and claiming to be friends with Sergei the Meerkat - and still the scammer doesn't twig. It's brilliant.

There's another scam you will want to be aware of.

I had a phone call about Amazon Prime.

It throws you a bit by initially claiming that your amazon account will automatically be upgraded to Prime and payment taken etc blah blah.

I reckon this is to prompt you to talk to them to cancel this, where I would guess they'll be asking you for some financial details.

The tip off for me on this one was because it came through on my land line - which I don't register ANYWHERE

Best one I received about 2 years ago. They called to say that a computer virus has been spreaded and that if not took care of by their "Super duper Saturday morning cartoon team of computer fixers" it would permanently crash my PC.

So they asked a few questions about what model and software I had and strung them along. Eventually they announced how much it would cost to remove the virus. They typed up about my PC and with a sad tone in their voice they said "We can confirm that your PC is infected with the virus we can come around and sort this as soon as possible"

Gutting I know! They then told me to turn off the PC my reply?

I don't have a PC.... It took them about 10 seconds before they hung up...

My mum was scammed a few years back. It really upset and frightened her, she thought they knew where she lived and would come round and beat her up. We got the money she lost back but the police were no help, one officer even told me it was a genuine call . Both my parents are now very wary BUT because they are of a generation where politeness is ingrained they struggle to tell someone to go away or to believe that a person would lie. This is where the scanners gain a foothold. We have at least got then to a stage where they will phone me or the bank if they have a call they feel is suspicious

Seems to be another one going around where you get a phone call telling you thst your broadband provider has been trying to contact you, mentions irregular activity and the threat of disconnection.

Not a particulatly clever one though as anyone will spot it as your internet provider would surely identify themselves (which company they're calling from).

My best one was, recd a call from "Microsoft" (Off shore / asian lady) and they had noticed my pc was running slow and they could help me with increasing the speed...

After a few mins the lady from "Microsft" asked me to confirm the operating system I was using (btw I work in IT) so I pretended to not be IT literate so very paitently she tried assisting me.. Eventually I told her I was using Mac OS 10 (Apple) and she wanted to go but I kept her on the phone saying how impressed I was the noticed my "pc" was running slow, and I virtually begged her not o go as I wanted her to help speed my Macbook pro up, After repeating she couldn't help me, and me saying how helpful she had been, she ended the call. I must have kept her on the phone for about 15mins, If Microsoft ever ring you try this

Its not a scam. I am sure he didnt mean exactly 30 minutes on the dot.

That's why scammers don't bother making emails etc believable. Vulnerable people won't pick up on spelling mistakes/ Nigerian prince crap. So only the vulnerable trusting people will reply to them. Makes the scammers job easier.

I've had that number a few times. Is definitely a scam. HMRC are unlikely to say they were going to arrest you so it's pretty obvious. However as stated, elderly or vulnerable people may fall for it.

Number that rings you starts with 0300 200, which is exactly what HMRC payment line begins with. Only the last 4 digits are different. So can understand how people get sucked in.

Due to the kind of work I do I speak to HMRC regularly and they call from withheld numbers usually.

Agree with said comments "cunts".

"My mum was scammed a few years back.

I tell you what though if I'd been able to get my hands on the person who did that to my mum he would wish he'd never been born.

"An 0300 number rang me earlier to tell me I owe £462 in tax fraud money , and if I dont pay it I'll be arrested in 30 minutes .

That was 2 hours ago .

But my point is that some people may fall for this , so warn elderly relatives of this please .

Thankyou "

I've had one of those. When i rang the number back it turned out to be the National Assembly for Wales. The number had been cloned.
