It was Stephen King, but an early book published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman

Not so sure any have scared me as such.

Stephen King's IT was a great read but I wouldn't say it made me quickly run up the stairs at night etc.

Having said that, I don't read as much as I would like.

Somewhere In The Ether…

Mr Tickle from The Mr Men always scared me as a child.

It was the pictures more than the actual story though to be fair as you’d see his long wobbly looking arm poking through a door......

I’ve read soooo many horror books, and there is one that absolutely stands out. ‘House Of Leaves’ by Mark Z Danielewski. I’ve managed to convince a few others to read it, and everyone has been freaked out by it.

"The Shining.....better than the film. Truly creepy and deserving of the "Joey Tribbiani put the book in the freezer" award"

I've read several Stephen King books, and have always thought he has a very fluid, conversational style of writing.

But The Shining is different - each time I've read it, I've struggled a bit to get the middle, as though he wasn't quite on form, but then it suddenly takes off and it's a real page turner.

Am I alone in that?

And the book is definitely better than the film

Frankenstein is probably the most original and truly a great book.

Ghost Story by Peter Straub might be the best more modern horror story I can think of but the most appalling and frightening one is probably Pet Semetary by Stephen King. It didn’t bother me when I read it originally - and the actual horror and resurrection side still don’t - but read it again recently after becoming a parent and the death of the little boy, Gage, is just horrific. It’s amazing in one sense but mostly it’s just a stomach churning scenario for any parent to think about.
