... is a basic command of written English actually important in a profile/message?

Maybe it's my age or my background, but some days it feels like everyone under 30 can't actually construct a sane sentence, let alone *impress* with a message...

The occasional spelling mistake doesn't bother me at all, not everyone has had the same level of education, people can have dyslexia etc. As long as it's not ridiculously littered with text speak and I'm able to understand it, that's fine with me. I'm not looking for a study buddy

I don't mind spelling mistakes as we all make them, but texting in dialect fucks me right off!

I mean it must make them think twice as long how to spell a word wrongly than it does how to spell it right? Doesn't it? So I just ignore them altogether, it works for me

Must admit, poor spelling, punctuation and grammar does put me off a little.

I'm not talking about typos, but profiles that are simply poorly written, long blocks of text, 'text speak' and so on, are off-putting.

Of course, not everyone has the same level of educational attainment, but if you're not that great at spelling, proof-read it with a dictionary.

Same goes for 'bad' tattoos, dirty teeth and fingernails.

Probably sounds a bit judgemental but a honest account of the way I see a few things...

I’m the same... I zoom in on that and then switch off. I get messages I don’t even understand sometimes. Perfect example is the use of Lady’s as opposed to Ladies.

If that makes me stuck up then so be it

Guess it’s unfortunate that a social platform relies on a good grasp of written English. A lot of lovely people in real life have a poor grasp of grammar. It’s not something you should judge people on.

However, it does matter. Especially for us. Intelligence is attractive to us, and we (wrongly) associate intelligence with a good grasp of English. We shouldn’t, but on here it’s the only way to quickly determine if a person is smart, so we do. But we would never dismiss someone based on their grammar. Kindness and respect counts for so much, and you don’t need to be Oscar Wilde for that.

I'm far from a snob, but I am dyslexic.

I work hard to ensure what I write is correct

Spelling, grammar, punctuation.. I do rely on my phone, the odd typo/auto carrot slips through.

So yes, when I get a message, which is lazily written (there is a difference between lazy & an obvious issue) then it bloody grinds my gears.

Lazy writer, lazy attitude, lazy person.

If someone can't spare an extra minute to construct a decent message then I figure they would approach everything in life with the same attitude

But i’m not down with the kids. I have no idea what all the abbreviations are like TTFN etc so text speak can leave me boggled.

It depends. I think a profile should be well written as you have time to have someone proof read it if neccessary. I'm a bit more relaxed with messages however as poor spelling/grammar doesn't automatically mean someone is poorly educated. An ex of mine was possibly one of the most intelligent people I have ever met but had dyslexia. The guy who was top of my A Level science class was also exceptionally clever but due to dyslexia, struggled to spell physics.

I'm also not overly obsessed with the need for a formal education necessarily. I enjoy people with a natural curiosity who enjoy learning about things that spark excitement within them. Someone could have a masters degree but very little passion for something beyond the requirements of their education.

I’m susceptible to ‘fat thumbs’ while instant messaging or even banging out an opening response to a profile that grabs my attention, and it always makes be shudder when I let a ducking autocarrot through without having proofread. But I find those profiles that are littered with spelling and grammar mistakes usually turn me off to the point that I can’t contemplate responding. Of course people have varying levels of education and erudition, but not being able to spot multiple simple errors in the one chance you have to sell yourself is a turnoff for me that I have trouble overcoming. You can spot the difference between dyslexia and laziness. Luckily the most common offenders are male, so I don’t encounter it that often outside the forums.

We don’t like text speak, but sometimes it is that English isn’t someone’s first language. I always answer if I could be interested and understand the gist of what they were saying. If I ignored improper grammar we would’ve missed out on one of our best meets. English was his third language. We have talked on here to a few who also learned English as a second or third language. It’s always better to wait for a second message to decide when you like their pics

A few bits of text styled typing doesn’t annoy me. It’s very clear that many don’t have the same education, articulation skills etc. I used to be more snobby about it but then learned about literary privilege ( in regards to spelling or grammar, not just text speak).

My autocarrot does all sorts of weird things with spelling and punctuation. I usually have a quick scan and correct any errors, sometimes I miss them.

If those errors stop someone from messaging me then fair enough, I do think it's a little daft that it happens though.

What’s with the negativity? I wasn’t ‘going on about’ it. It’s a thread asking opinions and I answered. Txt spk is lazy in my opinion. If you like it then fair enough but I don’t.

I can generally spot where English is a second or third language. The same is true of dyslexics. Both tend to be better written than the ones I reject.

I suspect it takes me longer to work out what is being said in text speak than the person took to type it.

I'm definitely not a snob but if I'm sending a first message to somebody (which may give them their first impression of you) I will type in my best English with hopefully no spelling mistakes.

I wish others would do the same.

OP.

I can appreciate what you are saying.

The problem exists because of the rise of alternative ways of Communicating over the years.

People before used to write or type their dialogue but with the emergence of Text and similar formats, the shortening of words to fit into a specific space became necessary.

Unfortunately, some people now see it as acceptable to use such styles in their everyday lives.

Equally, the tendency within teaching in recent decades to move away from Spelling as important, has led to a generation who often don't know how to spell, or use similar sounding words in the right context.

But they might use a Spell-Checker but as these are usually biased towards English (American) and are 18 months behind real time, then their use can be worthless.

I had my own Proofreading business from 2006 - 2011; errors by companies became commonplace for me and I did very well out of it.

Nowadays, I'd allow a fair share of badly spelled or incorrect content on a profile before I'd consider whether to meet or not. After all, what people put in writing against how they speak are two different things.

Autocarrot catches me out quite frequently, also my fingers were not designed for typing on small screens.

But now my eyes are adding to the problem, a certain regular poster comes from Brighton - even Hove!

One that makes me laugh is defiantly instead of definitely. "I defiantly want to eat your pussy" makes me feel like I'd need to put them in the naughty corner afterwards

Also discrete as opposed to discreet. Thought this site was meant to bring people together, not be "individually separate and distinct".
