Many think we are buggered as a species. I say we are successful but are fast outgrowing the Earth. I personally don't like the pollution we have created but on a species levels is it part indication that we are ready to move on (where to is another topic)?

Agreed. The rights and wrongs are impossible to prove and not the job of our species either.......

Doomsday prophets have been around since we climbed out of the primordial soup and grunting at one another.

Yes, the earth is in a bit of a state.

But humans are the most adaptable species on the planet.

If the masses took their heads out of their collective arsehole and stopped voting for the same old political class, same old money families. Bickering over petty shit, then we'd get stuff sorted quicker.

Mass communication, it'll save the planet. At the moment the pendulum is swinging to the Right, rise of Nationalism.. there will be conflict because of it, mark my words. Itll swing back round to the Left in time.

Long term strategic planning, use it and you'll find a solution to any problem.

Just before we wreck the planet to the point where it’s irredeemable... aliens who have been watching us for many millennia will come and kill all humans as were not good custodians of the earth considering how old the earth is and the fraction of a second humans have existed.

So basically voting for who you tell them to rather than who someone else tells them to.....?

I guess the beauty of humanity is that we are all individuals and can make our own minds up

I think we are the scourge of the planet. Everything lived in synch until we came along, the first caveman to fence and house animals to breed and eat was the start.

Without the farming, human population would have been kept in synch with the balance. We would have been another animal living on earth. Instead of a superior race exploiting everything we can, we exploit this planet of everything it offers.

The vast oil deposits that took millions of years to form, we've used over half of them already, doomed we are, doomed.

Bristol East

The growth of population drives growth in the consumption of resources.

The increasing consumption of resources does two things:

- accelerate climate change

- increased competition between nations for resources, aka war

One or the other will unleash an energetic backlash that culls the population.

I dont like all this culling talk. Sounds almost as if some of you want it to happen?

There are more than enough resources to go round. More than enough space.

It's just we have super rich and super powerful people who Horde it all for themselves.

I've always wondered why our politicians aren't people with expert knowledge and years of experience in the areas that matter when it comes to building and maintaining a society.

Instead, they're all career politicians with experience in nothing other than being a greedy manipulative twat who refuses to answer a direct question.

Is it....this planet span for millions of years, nothing changed (okay a meteor hit and fucked the dinosaurs) but really, left to it's own eco system nothing happened. We learned to farm, breed animals and hence our successful population growth. Now there are too many of us. We are our own (and many species) demise.

I am positive, I know some people will survive. What's happening now has happened since the first people walked upright. The population increases, becomes marginalised in certain areas, food becomes scarce, resources become scarce, the population decreases to fit what's available to it...and so it begins again

We've both the abilities to drive our extinction or to improve the lives of billions, as well as other life here. I'd not wish us on any other environment away from earth. Fleeing to other places is indicative of the disposable mindset that's developed.

If we retain the ability of earth to support life, evolution should eventually produce a successor to people as the dominant species.

Why? Enough people have a decent mind, but the universe is impartial to whether life is destructive or passive.

Applying collective guilt to people is a nasty tendency that has no business in scientific reason.
