Added option on search....

I've never came across this on fab but on other sites I've noticed an option on whether or not you'd be happy to accommodate/meet anyone disabled.

It's a bit of a taboo subject as disabilities are massively varied but thought I'd open up the discussion to see if anyone thinks this would be beneficial as an added option?

Some people are very open and for some it's just not their thing so please no negativity on this, everyone's entitled to an opinion at the end of the day.

Wheelchair icon perhaps? (I realise that not everyone uses a wheelchair but universally recognised)

I haven't been on here all that long but I haven't came across any profiles where people have ever mentioned any disabilities and I just think to avoid any unnecessary awkwardness on both parts it might be easier if there was an additional option or as mentioned, maybe a universal symbol or something when originally registering for an account?

Some people may not wish to declare their disability though.

"Some people may not wish to declare their disability though. "

I completely get that and to each their own. Like I said originally not every disability is the same and not everyone is confident or willing to say. But at the same point this could maybe something similar to 'friend only' pics where you have to build that relationship before these things are disclosed?

I work with a variation of disabilities and as you said some people are less inclined to be, for want a better word 'labelled', but I know a lot would also like to know that their 'searching' or speaking to people who have no quarrels with them or their disabilities, physical or otherwise...

I guess it's like a man searching for a woman but saying he likes athletic rather than curvey, or when a woman searches and says similar?... Tricky one to get rite for everyone I think

Not a good idea at all.

Disabilities come in many forms. Some unless someone told you, you wouldn't have a clue.

The thing is, you make this an option for searches you effectively MAKE an issue of it

The fact it's not mentioned here I think is a good thing

Totally agree in the fact 'not all disabilities are visible'

Just think if you have a search related to a certain body type e.g athletic/curvy etc, then why not when you register have an 'option' to say if any disabilities. It doesn't have to be specific and again it can be completley optional.

Just like anything, you could take it to the extremes and start saying that people who can accommodate must state if it's wheelchair accessible etc. But I'm just thinking if people aren't necessarily offended by body shape/size profiles then maybe some kind of symbol or marker or something stating someone has a disability, might make it easier or more comfortable for people with disabilities to meet people?...

Very difficult subject to judge I guess but glad to see peoples varied opinions on this.

Is that not what convisation is for?

You say it's optional but if someone doesn't want to be puplic about then there will always be people who criticize them for "misleading/lying" I think is best the way it is.

I know it's different for everyone and that's why I though I'd open up the subject.

For me personally, having conversations with disabled people I both work with and support, it's on occasion been suggested that 'certain' sites they use, they find it difficult at times as they can have great conversations but then when they disclose a disability, the conversation changes or dies off. They would then prefer to have an option where they can talk to people with no inhibitions about whether they have any form of disability or not from the offset.

My personal opinion what I say is that their obviously not talking to the rite people who are only after 1 thing, but again this is only my opinion and understandably can't speak for everyone.

Not sure. If someone didn't mention they were in a wheelchair and I only found out when I turned up, that would be odd.

What if your disability was having no willy? I mean, somebody could say they were ok meeting disabled, and then I turn... I mean, the person with no willy turns up, clothes come off, and it's awkward silences all round.

Yes that's totally reasonable but over 60% of disabilitys are hidden.

That's really unfair, saying the people are only after one thing. I only fuck people I'm attracted to. I won't ever fuck someone because I was guilt tripped into it.

People can chat and then change their mind for many reasons. Face pic, something they said, just not feeling it.

Apologies if I caused any offense, I meant only that some people find physical attraction, some people find an emotional connection and sometimes, regardless of photos and chat, it just doesn't work when you meet up.

Everyone has their own attraction.

Really greatful for all the responses to this thread. I knew it would be a taboo subject but really happy that people can express their opinion on a difficult subject without anyone getting judgemental or argumentative. Thanks everyone x

It's a good idea. The site user has the option to put the symbol on their profile. If they don't want to, that's fine. People do have personal preferences - we all do! I don't see it as patronising to acknowledge that I would be happy to meet a disabled person, or that I would be meeting them out of a sense of charity.

As I said earlier it would be a terrible idea. Because It would be a case of if someone chose not to have the symbol but had a disability they would be accused of lying or deceptive. If someone what's to disclose it they can on their profile.

The thing is if you had to choose yes or no to being happy to meet a disabled person then there's a lot out there who would say yes rather than appear discriminatory but actually wouldn't be comfortable with it.

And actually why should someone feel compelled to disclose it. 35% of the adult population have a disability and over 60%of those are invisible.

No one should feel compelled, it's always down to the individual but just the same as when they input their personal preferences or vice versa their personal physique...
