It's good to talk...

So last night during BGT the champions final they launched a new ITV campaign.

So basically they paused the show and went totally silent for one minute then did the Same during the ad break.

The idea was for people to talk to the people in the room with them or even send a to text someone. The premise is to get people to "check in" with each other as a way of opening a conversation about mental wellbeing.

I think the idea is a good one in theory but not sure how effective it was.

So I'd be interested in others thoughts.

Did they explain what the idea was? I suppose watching people just sat there not talking would be as boring as adverts. 1 minute isn't long enough to start a conversation. The show would be back on.

On a mooch

It’s a good thing to do and you’ll see lots of examples over the coming weeks, as the focus this year is young people.

It doesn’t take much to make time for yourself, your family and friends to just say hi, how was your day.

My son doesn’t have an off button when I walk through the door from work, he’s going through routine changes where he is now home after school on his own for about an hour until I return. I let him just flow, even though some is just random. The biggest rule I’ve always had, as I had it as a kid, meal time is just that... eat and talk, with no outside distractions.

If you don’t talk how can you notice a change in someone’s behaviour ?

Everyone needs to talk.... so if there’s someone you’ve been meaning to speak to, pick up the phone and say hi

It’s the simple things in life that keep you going

I thought it was really powerful. Anything that reminds people to talk is a great thing in my opinion. We are still not getting through to people and every little helps in keeping the conversation going.

I’m not sure it’ll do anything major.. but if just one person reaches out it’s done it’s job.

Was about to say that, it's the usual kind if marketing shit to get more ppl to watch shit on tv and continue to live in an artificial world without the guilt.... .....I think its starts internally and ppl find comfort in being alone or isolated watching BGT, you can lead a horse.....

I had a date with my girl all day and evening. We talked non-stop, laughed, cried, shared a meal, shared some bodily fluids and I didn't miss BGT or any of their fakery.....

When I worked at Barclays offices they had a programme where you took time out to phone elderly or people that lived alone that didn’t get out for a chat the same time each week, which was a nice thing to do.

I agree and on the whole I think it's a fantastic idea. The problem is there isn't the support to back it up if people need professional help.

Yes all the time it's the having people over I struggle with. Even suffer panic and anxiety issues when the post comes! Getting help though as I finally told my doctor and he has referred me for counseling.

I agree to a certain extent but you have to look around when in a cafe. People sat at the same table but all on their phones and not interacting with eachother. So I guess if it makes people think it's not a bad idea.

That's excellent that you have spoken to the doctor. So it seems it is good to talk. X

It's why I don't accommodate on my profile but maybe that could change in a few months. So many randy buggers in my area that I would love to message but they can't accommodate either lol.

There is a lot of support out there, ideally the individual recognises they have an issue early on and seeks out those resources available.

I’m not talking the NHS as they are stretched to the limits, but there are so many different types of support available, from helping yourself to online services. Sometimes someone just needs someone to reach out and talk to and you don’t need to be a professional to give that ear.

Yes, I agree. I'm just an old curmudgeon who dislikes these sort of attempts to persuade the population to act differently even if its perceived as good difference.

I didn’t leave my house for over a year at one point.. wouldn’t have strangers in either so had no washing machine for 6 months.. It’s hard work but I’ve turned a massive corner and am back in full time work! It can be done

That's freaky! My friend has been doing my washing since my washing machine broke down 3 months ago. I am so embarrassed that something like having people in your house is so difficult for me but is the norm for everyone else.

Well you’re not alone!! I couldn’t even pick up the phone to ring an electrician. Don’t beat yourself up but try and push yourself when you’re having a good day.. small steps but it’s sooooo possible to get through this!

I like to think I'm at the top of my friends' lists for someone to talk to if they need to. I've been through some dark times - but, to take the lyrics from one of my favourite songs:

When you think all is forsaken

Listen to me now (all is not forsaken)

You need never feel broken again

Sometimes darkness can show you the light

This is a trite meme, but it resonated.

I'd rather hear you talk about your shit for a few hours than hear your eulogy read out.

Always up for a chat. Even on the London Underground where, I know, it's forbidden.

It's clearly not the right platform

The Town by The Cross

If it highlights a societal problem and is the beginning of bigger things then im fine with it......

I am pretty fed up of 'emotion' , 'populism' and tutting at those that won't cry or air their personals in public that has crept and permeated through every aspect of modern life tho.

I felt a bit sick at the magician that made his 'best friends' death part of his act.
