Well no-one would look if I put water meters as the header would they!

Right has anyone changed onto a water meter and found their bills went down? I'm sure I'm being ripped off by Severn Trent,I've tried having a meter installed by them before but my stop tap is under my cooker,so I would need to pay a plumber first to move it. I'm fed up with them just guessing what I'm using.

Thames water put a meter in for me, at my stoptap (Washing machine cupboard) and they did all the moving necessary for free.

Every house has a stop tap? Why does that prevent you having a meter?

It doesn't. I have to get a plumber in first as my stop tap is under my cooker, they can't fit a meter under my cooker can they.

Yeah I was told I would need to get the stop tap moved first,I just don't want the expense of that and then found my bills would be the same.

Have they specifically told you that? You should also have a stop tap outside as well. I dont have a water meter, but my neighbor's is outside.

Yes they came out to look. I'm not aware of another stop tap to be honest, obviously there's the grid on the pavement infront of the house, but yeah I don't know. The meter would need to be inside the house I presume.

Assuming all services work on the same principle, your waste water charge (the water thats taken away such as bath, sink toilet, etc) is based on what you have used.

So for example if you use a hosepipe a lot for watering the garden, car washing etc you are being charged for it being taken away when it is actually just soaking away.

A tip is to check whether you are being charged for the taking away of rainwater from guttering. If your rainwater is disposed of via a soakaway then you should not pay the charge. The charge is there by default.

My bill has increased with a water meter but i do use a hosepipe a lot so i do not have a problem with that.

I don't live in your area, but I found that my water bill was four times higher when not on a water meter. However, as said before, if you are a couple with 3or more kids, (bathing every night), have the washing machine and dishwasher on daily than you might find that you pay more on a meter.

The water meter is outside. The water supply company will locate you outside supply tap and fit the meter there.

It has to be outside so they can read the meter when they want to without having to check your in.

I don't use a hosepipe,my little car has the odd bucket flown over it every few months and I do water my water in the summer. My bill says my average spend is £1.11 a day,but they've just put it up to £41 a month.

It sounds like I need to pay out for a plumber first to hopefully then get lower bills.

I have one, not sure where it is but it’s separate from the actual indoor stop tap.

I’ve had one in various houses and found it to be cheaper with just me or when I was with my ex.

Diagonally Parked in a Parallel Universe

The place I live had a water meter in place before I moved in, but the building isn't on mains drainage, with waste water going to a septic tank and the rainwater going into soakaways.

My water bill is £4 per month.

It’s worth having a look in your drive way, garden or pavement outside the house to see if there’s a little metal flap or cover, this will usually have a stop tap in it for the property. If there isn’t - and regardless of whether you have a meter installed or not - I would look at getting a stop tap put in there anyway.

From the sounds of things at the moment, if you did get a water leak inside your property but before the stop tap then there would be no way to isolate the flow and you could end up flooding your house internally which could cost you thousands in damage x

I'm pretty sure I don't have one on my property unless it's under a big fat grid I have a couple of those on my property?! One on my driveway and one outside the utility out the back.

Could be under one of those, it’s definitely worth a check. It’s usually builders who install them, depending on when the house was built and by who means that it could be in an unlikely place. I took ages trying to locate ours for the water company who said we did not have one - I knew we did as we’re a new build on a meter - eventually found it in the neighbours front lawn! X

At least it's not in your garden it's better in your neighbours . I don't really want to disturb the block paving they've done on top of the driveway grid, they've obviously cut the bricks so I can get access to it.

Confused...

Depends if you have flat or house, hows many people, how many baths, hows many showers, if you have garden, wash your car, how much washing etc.

If you are in a flat, don't wash your car, water your garden will probably go down.

Omg Ignite what a farce!! The meter can be put externally under the pavement, however they don’t like doing that because it’s more costly. As for you not saving money you have 12 months to revert back should that be the case x

Well it just annoyed me when they put my instalments up. Now thinking about it my daughter has moved in with me fulltime rather than sharing time with her dad, she's not digging the step mum much. Even so she's barely here what with school, work, boyfriend, friends etc. Pennies are tight I don't want to be paying out more than I should be,if I knew that's how much water I was using then fair enough.

Our meter is out on the pavement.

The difference in cost will be down to what your fixed price bill actually is of course. Here it was astronomical.

I think it depends on your water authority. Ours are read by a man with a long stick laying on the path. I think you'd probably be better off talking to whoever supplies your water because it seems to depend on your area

Had a meter fitted at other house when I lived alone soon as kid's came back bills were nearly as high as just paying when I told them I didn't want it anymore and revert back to a bill guess what you can't have the meter taken out they will turn it off while you're living there but as soon as you move it goes on and can never go back total rip off will never trust Yorkshire water again
