I'm me plain and simple, what you see is what you get, take me or leave me.

There are those who choose to adopt a persona or hold things back in some way or another, and where that is to maintain privacy I totally understand so long as they give a fairly accurate indication of their general character.

What I don't understand is where people adopt a completely different persona on-line to their off-line one, and yet still plan to meet, which to me is duplicitous at best.

It's proven that text (aka verbal communication) only gives something like 20 percent of your full power of communication, most of your personality is contained within your non-verbal and para-verbal communication. That's why most ppl meet for a social before they agree to shag innit....

I take the point you’re making but I would say that the bit they do see is how I really am, in the sense that there is no falsehood or created persona. We can never be sure of others perceptions of us in any scenario in life. It’s clearly not all of me, it can’t be can it? But you don’t get ‘the full person’ until you have spent significant time with them I think.

There is a lot more to me than what you see on fab and I’m pretty sure it’s the same for most of us.

The people I meet will know me better and the more we meet the more they’ll know me. I still manage to surprise my mum after 40 odd years so be warned that you should expect surprises too. Some you may like, some you may not. But it’s not about being purposefully deceptive, it’s about perception over a rather limited communication medium.

I think that nowadays you are obliged to obtain their consonant before entering someone's vowels.

Seriously though, OP's question is a very good one and no surprise to see the volume of well thought out and honest responses to it, notably :

As someone called Brian once said (in a film about his life) to his crowd of unwanted followers "we are all individuals". Fab, like the Internet, is many different things to each of us. It is a relative new phenomenon and one we haven't really figured out yet, so a certain amount of care is required. That can lead to people taking on or demonstrating a personality that is not 100% their own.

It empowers some to seek out experiences they would never dream of risking in 'real life' - bringing them a step or 20 closer to their fantasies. To others it's a chance to show a side of themselves that they have, for many reasons, kept hidden. A side they themselves might have been unaware of and one that they cannot risk exposing to those closest to them for fear of damaging their relationship, so Fab is a welcome outlet.
