Nope! My mum and dad never went on a plane, my sister has never been on a plane and only been on one once a few weeks ago. So I reckon I can several more flights with no guilt at all. My family carbon footprint is fairly low.

Oh ffs. Yes aircraft as individual vehicles may be rather heavy polluters, but share it between passenger numbers and modern gas turbines are cleaner than most public transport and certainly less damaging to the environment than the energy that goes into mining precious base elements required for EV batteries. And yes, I can comment with some certainty having worked in oil, aviation, and now the renewable energy sectors.

my own little sanctuary

When politicians do Skype group calls instead of flying across the globe to do “summits” I will consider relinquishing the very few opportunities I get to travel. Although without flights people wouldn’t be as culturally understanding ergo it would make people even more ill educated than they are already.

The air quality in Southampton breaches legal levels almost every time we have a ship in port. "

Also when we more that one in (happens all the time) the population in the city doubles, traffic is horrendous and has a big impact but not all negative. The unemployment rate is low and they boost the local economy but there is definitely a huge environmental impact.

I don't get motivated by guilt, solely by considered choice and pursuit of what I believe to be right. I've flown a few thousand miles this year, considerably less than I used to do, before I decided to reduce my flights.

Emotional manipulation of others is generally wrong imo. We need to educate and engendet rapid political action to reduce our heating effects upon the planet. Everything done to mitigate heating is useful but the bulk of the changes will need governments to deliver the frameworks needed to achieve major goals.

Thankfully there are several promising options emerging, including large tree planting action. Significant reductions to our meat rearing and consumption also can realise goals too.

I’m offsetting my flight footprint by not producing any children for this already over populated planet.

Hopefully the whingers all have brats and will make sure they never step foot on a plane, so I can fly peacefully without one of the little shits squealing throughout the flight, kicking my seat or running up and down the plane like it’s a fucking playground, while the parents sit there drinking.

To sum up, I really don’t give a shit how much someone tries to shame me as I enjoy the sun and cocktails in my luxury adult only Caribbean hotel- Long Island iced tea please barman!

I do what I can and always put my Weetabix box in the correct recycling container although now we have 432 kerbside boxes it is proving slightly more difficult to remember which one the very tiny springs from the inside of my electric toothbrush replacement heads go in

I heard from a reputable source (more or less on radio 4) that a European flight only has the same carbon footprint as a leg of lamb.

I’ll continue to fly. After all the amount of damage I’ll be able to do in my lifetime is pretty minimal, assuming I live for another 30 years or so.

What is dangerous to the planet is having kids, who may have kids who have kids.

Damage therefore unlimited.

I think talk of targeting flights for their environmental impact is a distraction technique. Most of us fly infrequently. Those flights would still fly without us. There's not a lot any if us can do on an individual basis to limit the environmental impact of commercial flights. But it's a lot easy to have a conversation about things we can't do than what we can. Which is why, in my opinion, we are pushed towards these debates.

It's a load of bollocks. Aviation is an industry that supports millions of jobs. As are other forms of transport.

They may well be helping to warm the planet - but to shame people for wanting a holiday abroad? Fuck that.

As it happens, I've not flown anywhere in 16 years; which is why I can eat as much bacon as I like. LOL

Aviation fuel is a mixture of various alkanes and alkenes of short chain lengths. These are basically a chain of carbons bonded to hydrogen. Depending upon the exact mix the exact ratios will vary, but there are approximately 2 hydrogen atoms bonded to each carbon. The relative atomic masses are 12 and 1,so for each 12 grams of carbon there are 2 grams of hydrogen.

Assuming complete combustion (which it won't be) then each carbon is converted to CO2, so one carbon bonded to 2 oxygens. The mass of oxygen is 16 and so the relative mass of CO2 is 12+16+16=44.

Overall one carbon and its associated hydrogens weighing an equivalent of approximately 14 becomes CO2 weighing 44. Thus the increase in mass compared to the weight of fuel on board at take off.
