Look at the distances between stars and there are supposed to be more than grains of sand on earth.

If that's right, there must be no end to the universe. Or a very long way.

Based on just the known universe that we can observe with the technology we have at this point. It could actually be many times the grains of sand of all the beaches on earth.

The common theory that the universe was created by "The Big Bang" would indicate that there is an end to the universe, and although the universe is still expanding, it isn't growing in mass... just moving away from the epicentre of the explosion.

The universe is growing as it expands, new suns are born all the time but likewise suns die. A good percentage of the suns we see with the naked eye every night are not there anymore.

The number of grains of sand on Earth, the number of stars in the sky and the size of the universe is so staggeringly large it's pretty difficult to get your head around any of them. It's not surprising that trying to compare two of them in your head is difficult. I'm prepared to take the word of astrophysicists on this. Luke

As for how they calculate the number of grains I'm picturing some poor grad student counting individual grains from a bucket and then weighing them saying 50000 in a kilo then spilling some and having to start again

Are they also including the sand under the sea or is it beach exclusive

Also if you are in possession of or know someone with night vision goggles take a look at the sky on a clear night away from light pollution it's amazing

There are a lot of assumptions, some may be right some wrong, but nevertheless assumptions. Often these are used to build a foundation of theories which as they grow momentum they are assumed as fact. It's the way a lot if science is worked out. Sometimes an assumption is never proven to be fact but is latter assumed so.
