Camberley occasionally doncaster

The fact she is like a brainwashed puppet? A lot of the things she does are only eco on the surface? Her green trip across the Atlantic was offset by the fact that the crew had to fly to bring it back..

Just around the corner

The world isn’t ready to be told what to do by children. Even if they’re right.

I think she’s sincere, but is being manipulated by some of her entourage.

It's a "plea to emotion” by a child. All please to emotional are supposed to be instantly dismissed in a debate. You're supposed to instantly lose a debate by using them.

The Simpsons used to make fun of it, the "think of the children” being shouted out as they acted upon emotion to do something crazy.

You probably feel off about the whole thing because on one of the biggest political stages, instead of coldly presenting hard facts, they wheel out a child to plea for our emotions.

I do think some things are done as a stunt though, like sailing the Atlantic to address the UN.

Anyone else see the irony that the people who had to bring the boat back had to fly to New York?

Saw it on a flyer this weekend and I believe it’s true

Stop whinging on about car journeys and air travel. The only way to save the planet is stop population increase.

Sadly the bleeding heart liberals aren’t prepared to accept that the biggest damage they will ever to do the planet is having a kid.

Somebody needed to do it , yes the fact she is a child helps, but so what, she is passionate about her beliefs , that's all

Well she has Asperger for a start. Her intentions are well meant, but I wasn’t comfortable watching that speech. She is being pushed blatantly, which is worrying, and fear she will be pushed too far. After researching her parents I’m not at all surprised.

The children would be better off turning up for lessons, getting qualifications, becoming engineers and scientists and inventing ways to reverse climate change.

I found it ironic that as she gave her speech, on a big stage, with massive screens and a sound system, with the worlds media focussing in, and everyone watching on their devices... How much carbon was produced powering all that?

"Huh , wtf ??"

Greenpeace said that they didn't need to prove global warming was happening in order to start acting. It was a move that would be political suicide for other parties.

They ramped up media coverage and started appeals to emotion and people ate it up.

Later bush used the same tactic to go to war with Iraq, said he didn't need proof, that the threat was enough. People ate it up.

People who accept appeals to emotion are the reason the UK ended up in Iraq and Afghanistan. You might think it's needed, and it's cool when it's making you gains in what you want, but it's a fucking awful tactic that leads to people being murdered for nothing.

I'm not biting on this thread.... .....much.....

(I do think it's creepy af though, not just that she's being used, but all the ppl around her and the ppl for and against and arguing over a small child who knows pretty much fuck all about life or the planet . Funny how ppl will listen to a child who knows nothing but an expert with a lifetime of experience and qualifications is somehow viewed as crooked, bent or not to be trusted. So adult ppl have to use a child as a megaphone these days. I also find it cringy that they didn't choose a small boy to be the lead figure. Dog whistle psychology at its best but people who want to believe always will. I just think ppl should stop shouting and start listening, talking and learning, on a lot of today's issues.....)

I have nothing against her personally BUT I absolutely hate the movement that’s behind her and I have zero respect for her opinion.

She’s a puppet being used by someone (no idea who). And I really dislike this phoney hero worship of her.

She’s 16. She doesn’t know anything other than what’s been fed to her. She doesn’t do anything other than moan. There’s nothing productive, proactive or positive about her movement.

It’s a bizarre moment in time.

The full speech was passionate, inspiring and thought provoking. She is enthusing the current generation of young people to become fully engaged about climate and environment. This will be the next generation going into industry and making changes and these will be the people who might just right now cause their parents (the current mainstay of industry) to rethink their outdated attitudes to the environment. I see the effect first hand as my industry is just on the cusp of a revolution in packaging, not because it will make more money (profits will go down) but because the younger generation will drive it through changes to their shopping habits.

The only way to end this demise is by a mass global population cut anyway. Either nature will find a way to do this or if not we must act ourselves. First things first would be to sterilise every convict globally, then introduce a global one child system for the next 25years. Finally any convicted child killer or child rapist should be shot to death, globally.

Does that include rich persons white collar crime? Why does a child hold more weight than anybody else? What if it later came out that they were innocent of all charges?

okay let me rephrase, if you’ve been found guilty of a crime, no matter how petty, then yes you will be sterilised on admission to a prison. It’s eco friendly and a deterrent. I also believe anyone found purposely throwing litter should be imprisoned for 30 days in a work camp. Especially young men trying to impress girls at McDonald’s car parks.

Yes that is what I meant. Do I think anybody sitting the room in front of her in the UN will make any changes directly - tiny changes maybe but nothing more. Her audience wasn't the UN but the wider world. Do I think the current enthused younger generation will change things through their spending power and the effect of them entering industry over the next 10 years, yes massively. Do I think they will change government policy through their voting power in the next 5 years, yes I do. But it is just my opinion.

1. She has convinced kids all over the world to do their bit by throwing away their smart phones, give up their annual holidays abroad, not buying unnecessary new clothes and walking to school rather than have their parents drive them everywhere.

2. The solutions that she, and the other children have come up with are nothing short of miraculous.

3. Neither 1. or 2. above are remotely true.

Personally, I think she's being mentally abused by her parents and those around her. Some sort of child services really should investigate this, but none will probably have the courage.

If people want to know how to save the planet and change the world they’re best off listening to scientists... more specifically, physicists. People like Michio Kaku have already proposed hundreds of ways that we can create clean energy and a sustainable lifestyle - and he hasn’t even done it because he cares about climate change. He doesn’t give a fuck about that - these scientists just realise there’s more efficient ways of doing things.

Greta hasn’t suggested anything other than “it’s not my job to provide solutions” (that’s a direct quote btw)

Anyone who thinks you can have endless growth in a finite environment is either a madman or an economist - David Attenborough.

Ditching free market economics yeah. In its basic form capitalism is fine. Alongside social democratic government policies.

Climate change is happening all around you. The kids inherit the planet off us and they're rightly worried about what state it'll be in when they do. Fair play to them.

I don't care who is behind extinction rebellion when the kids I see at the front of it are fired up for an extremely important cause.

She’s making massive, unrealistic ultimatum style statements like carbon emissions must be reduced by 80% by 2030 rather than the 40% set in the Paris agreement while I highly doubt she has any clue of how that can be done.

She’s been diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, her mother is/was an international opera singer and her father is an actor.

The obvious conclusion to draw is that she is no doubt a fairly intelligent kid who is being used as a puppet to front this mass extinction crap and she is being manipulated by people hiding behind the scenes while her public appearances are choreographed and she is coached by her parents.

She was also diagnosed with selective mutism and I can’t help but think she could do with being slightly more mute!

To answer a few of the commonly repeated criticisms:

"She's just being brainwashed/used!" - She's written several times about her journey into activism, and how no one has pushed her or paid her, and that in the beginning her parents were dead set against her getting involved.

Those who are advancing this argument have zero evidence for it, and are being extremely patronising in assuming a 16 year old isn't capable of having their own opinions and drive.

"she uses planes/has a carbon footprint!"

It's impossible for someone to campaign on a global level without doing this. The whole point of her recent activity is to point the finger at government and business. That's where changes need to come from. It's great for individuals to reduce their footprint, but unless there's action on a macro scale it'll be meaningless.

"she seems a bit weird!"

Don't know what to tell you here - get some empathy? Realise not everyone in the world is the same?

"I'm not biting on this thread.... .....much.....

Peace to you all.... "

I honestly cannot believe some of the nasty comments being said about her ffs !!

She us merely attempting to raise global awareness about the biggest issue facing ALL of us ever!!

She us not being coerced or manufactured in any way .

She actually started this on her own , a lone school striker in her native country, and others joined her cause .

Good luck to her , shes a wonderful person for humanity

The media and governments just silence them because the geni is out of the bottle and they know it. Its just a matter of time until people realise they have been lied to and conned!!

Its a money making racket and lots of people are making their living from it.

I consider myself an environmentalist. Greta annoys me. I believe she is being used by more unscrupulous people behind the scenes.

Climate change and global warming are a mine field. The biggest thing any one can do right now to reduce carbon emissions, is to stop eating any animal products. The agricultural industry around the world is responsible for for co2 emissions than anything else currently on the planet. However, not even the green organisations touch this. WWF and Greenpeace don't even want to talk about it. Agriculture(as in the meat and dairy industry) is not the only contributer obviously but it is the number one contributer. As a race, we need to change our lifestyles. Big business has too much influence, power and money to take on. The information available is purposely so varied and debated, that action will be deathly slow. The best thing any of us can do, is to change your habits. We gurn at the govts to do things but by doing this, we push responsibility to someone else. We are all hypocrites but for a few who live the natural simple life. So, you want to do something? Stop eating meat, dairy, fish. Stop driving your car. Stop relying on apiances to do the work for you. If consumers speak with their feet and wallets. Business will adjust accordingly to chase the money. I still drive, I'm complicit too. I have hiwever changed to a the food plant based diet and B12 supplement. It's not enough though.

Anyway, good luck folks.

As a society we aren't used to unfiltered emotions. And facts being presented without spin or sugar coating. Her Aspergers means she is able to focus herself 100% on what she believes is right, she is looking at a mountain of data pointing to a single conclusion and then she sees the world governments completly ignoring the issue. I admire her stance and agree in what she is fighting for but there’s a massive but.......

I have no truck with her shouting and pontificating at world leaders and the UN. She gets away with it because at one time she was a cute girl with pig tails talking about grown up things.

Would it be acceptable for me to scowl and effectively slag off people on the world stage just because I hold a different view, no it wouldn’t and I wouldn’t get the platform to do it.

I would be impressed if she could give a solution to the issue rather than telling everybody else to find the solutions, that’s where the real heros and heroines are, I can tell people the world is in shit street just as well as she can.

It’s a difficult issue, even something like having less children will have drastic consequences on society. In time you have less people in working age contributing to taxes and a high number of retired who need healthcare and benefits. The state may not have enough taxation income to support the elderly.

We certainly can implement things but we need to be ready and willing to deal with knock on effects.

You did have a say, you could have ground the country to a halt, but you accepted it.

Look at America during world war 2, back when people ignored appeals to emotion. It took them ages to enter even though they knew it was an awful situation for people in europe. They waited for cold hard facts and figures.

These days Trump will fire missiles at a country over a child in a youtube video.

The UK got involved in Iraq because the people of the UK accept these below standard appeals all the time, its why they are leaving the EU, no facts, no figures, just emotions.

Emotions got you into iraq, emotions got you out of the EU, emotions will lead to the break up of the union, because emotions are not supposed to be used when deciding stuff.

This girl is Maud from the simpsons, running around screaming "THINK OF THE CHILDREN", her getting air time is patethic. Put on a scientist, put on the facts, put on anything but her.

its better the leader of your country work with facts than appeasing a child pulling at emotional strings.

The whole debate is forced and full of fake facts using a brain washed child is just cruel. yes the world needs to change the way it does things but will it reverse climate change? No. will it stop climate change? No. Will it earn big company's lots of money under the pretence of being green? Of course it will that's the real reason its in the news. The planets climate will always change it has done since the beginning of time there is nothing that can be do e about it all we can do is live the best life we can, change things to make ourselves have a more healthy life and not be brainwashed and fooled by things dressed as things they are not

I had to turn her off I found her quite annoying and I’m thinking she’s just a puppet for someone else her speech seemed a bit scripted but she’s doing no harm I suppose she will reach a different audience (younger) but me personally she got on my nerves a bit whiny

Stop whinging on about car journeys and air travel. The only way to save the planet is stop population increase.

She was right about what? The world ending and her future being stolen from her? She represents a very dangerous form of extremism that stifles rational debate and is causing hysteria in younger, more susceptible minds. She's a pawn and a poster girl fir a very dangerous and nefarious agenda.

For those of you asking "why is a child saying this stuff?", It's really simple, scientists have been warning us since the 90's, we never listened to them, things have rapidly gone worse and hot to the point where teenagers and kids are having to protest.

We're at a point in time where common people think scientists are "elites" trying to control us, at a point where anti-vaxxers have helped in the return of diseases like polio, etc. Everyone is so anti-science these days it's like we're going back to the dark ages because of people's stupidity and/or greed.

I like and respect her, including her determination at what is obviously a really tough pursuit that she's on. I don't expect her to be near perfect - she's so young and inexperienced but will learn. I can take her at face value and appreciate her efforts to improve the lives of billions, as well as other life on earth. Her Autism is potentially a tough call, whilst under so much scrutiny.

Who here wouldn't have found it tough at such a tender period in life? I expect high standards from elected officials but don't believe it to be appropriate for a volunteering school student, to that degree.

"The whole debate is forced and full of fake facts using a brain washed child is just cruel. yes the world needs to change the way it does things but will it reverse climate change? No. will it stop climate change? No. Will it earn big company's lots of money under the pretence of being green? Of course it will that's the real reason its in the news. The planets climate will always change it has done since the beginning of time there is nothing that can be do e about it all we can do is live the best life we can, change things to make ourselves have a more healthy life and not be brainwashed and fooled by things dressed as things they are not "

Natural climate change will continue but the current climate heating, since the start of the industrial revolution is predominantly caused by humans - the 2 types are totally distinct.

The science shows that there is a very short window to limit the level of current global heating, to within less extreme and catastrophic boundaries. There's potentially 10 or 11 years left for this. Each day wasted makes that goal harder or impossible to achieve. Failing at this imperils millions of people, the survival of some nations, other lifeforms and people you may know or family.

It's an emergency to limit the amount of the damage that is being caused and is the intelligent thing to do.

Over 99.9% of species that have ever existed on this planet are extinct. We are no different. We will follow them. We are not destroying the planet but we are destroying the environment in which humans can exist. The planet will continue without us. The biggest threat imo is overpopulation and the laws of unintended consequences that we hear every day especially around feeding more and more people putting ever more strain on our resources. The answer ? I don't have one. Humans are doomed...

Love that people are accusing 16 year old Greta Thunberg of being obviously manipulated because she is so young , but Shamina Begum should be treated as an adult for her actions at 15 because she definitely knew what she was doing .

I think he's saying that if you believe Greta is just a child that's being manipulated then perhaps other 15/16 year old girls could perhaps be being manipulated as well.... Worth thinking about eh...

We are all manipulated every day. Manipulated and conditioned by Governments, laws, the press,

Not sure I would compare these two cases too closely though.

I do get your point. I can find honour and integrity in Greta's views and actions but not in Begums..

I would say she is being manipulated, if you have read the magazine article written by her mother.

She spends most of her time mute outside of family members, she often starved herself.

Proper parents would shield a child that vulnerable not fill her head with extreme ideas.

Yes everyone with any sense wants a cleaner planet but we know that the world isn't going to end in the next year or so.

The left say that Begum is a child and didn't know what she was getting into at 15, yet think that 16 year olds should have the vote.

So I would say the left are the ones that can't make their minds up.

All of us are going out buying cheap stuff that doesn't last with so much packaging on the dam stuff. All wanting the latest gadget or fashion item to stay cool. Every school getting all these new computers linking everything to the internet, all going for electric cars, we as consumers need to say no enough is enough now we want this fruit and vegetables no matter what shape they are, stop this bio-mas shit because someone thinks it's sustainable energy it's all rubbish and a lot of people believe it. How is an electric car good for the environment? People need to look how they get the lithium for these batteries it bloody destroys the land they get it from. It's the emperor's new clothes all over again.

But it's all about control. The west can't compete with oil production from the middle east, so let's take the economic power away from OPEC, and have economies reliant on nuclear, solar and wind.

Has China, India, or Russia stopped building coal fired power stations? No. Are their scientists stupid? No.

In reality she’s not telling a bike anything new - and in fact all she’s doing is reinforcing doom and gloom and this apocalyptic vision of the future.

We need positive people to lead the charge. Not false anger and meaningless statements like “you stole my childhood”. Sure that sounds great but what does that actually mean? Who are the “you” that she’s talking about and why was anything stolen?

It’s just a finger pointing game with no real aim or solution

I really hate the sun newspaper, but this article by Jeremy Clarkson is pretty much spot on.

You have to love ole Jeremy.... his piece is concise and precise .... He shouldn't have been so patronising at the end of the piece ...but then ..... he is the arrogant git that is J.C. Long may he speak sense.

Well I rarely agree with him, but in this instance it’s hard not to.

Near Carmarthen

Greta Thunberg is being strategically exploited by the World Bank, the UN, and the non-profit industrial complex that serves the ruling classes. They are using her to advance their own self-interests and objectives – that are in direct opposition to everything this young woman articulates.

Google for "The Manufacturing of Greta Thunberg – for Consent: The Political Economy of the Non-Profit Industrial Complex"

If you really want to find out more.

A puppet... .... Just hope for her sake she copes when the fame fades. Another case of over pushing parents I suspect

Brighton - even Hove!

Let the end of this thread not be like the end of the world due to climate change.

Actually, of course, it won’t be the end of the world, climate change could change things so drastically it could mean the end of humans but good ol’ Erff will carry on.
