Adding to my playlist and I want some songs with substance/wit.

Who are your top lyricists?

I'll throw in Morrissey, Pete Docherty and Scroobius Pip to start.

Open to anything pretty much, maybe someone can introduce me to a gem I wouldn't have found myself.

Kate Tempest's lyrics are pretty profound too, but still trying to work out whether I actually enjoy listening to her.

Got to say though..

Eminem is a lyrical genius especially his recovery album 2010.

Bob Dylan is a modern day poet, far too many songs to mention individually so I will go with either Hurricane or Tangled Up in Blue.

I also like Difford and Tilbrook, the songwriters from Squeeze. Up The Junction and Labelled With Love are lyrical masterpieces.

"Giving Leonard Cohen a mention too for possibly the most perfect song ever written, Hallelujah."

whilst I acknowledge Mr. Cohens abilities, what is it about Hallelujah? Obviously this is all down to personal choice etc & I am not trying to start an argument, but I don't get it, I cannot hear what is so great about this song, who ever sings it. I have tin ears for this one & am trying to see (hear) what others hear as it is accepted as a classic.

I think it's so sexy and full of emotion. You can actually feel it and not just hear it. Not when bastardised by X factor though!

OK, thanks for that. I still don't feel that myself but can hear it. Nothing survives the Black Hole that is X Factorisation, although if I accidentally hear one I find immersing myself in original or best versions washes away the pain..

I sometimes enjoy listening to bands like Reverend And The Makers , The Streets or Hard-Fi. Their lyrics are more social commentary, often witty, sometimes depressingly accurate

Fit But You Know It by The Streets and The State of Things by Reverend and the Makers are good examples!

Elton John.. a great musical storyteller - Levon, yellow brick road, rocket man... all stories.

Alter bridge - a lot of the songs have great meaning, although I must profess a serious man crush on his vocal range. Check out 'Blackbird' a moving tribute to a friend.

Don't you find Myles gets a bit whiney on occasion though, despite his great vocal range. I did enjoy the duet he did of "The sound of silence" with the guy from Disturbed.

I like stone sour lol.. Corey Taylor has the most incredible voice. Song 3 does it for me everytime.

An oldie but goodie is for me Dire straits, the Brothers in arms album ..

There are maybe 1 or 2 tracks I'm not so keen on.. some of those high notes though.. make the hairs on the back if my neck stand on end.. sometimes I prefer Mark's voice.. its achievable by a human..
