Technically a professional means you need specific training to perform a job ie doctor/lawyer you can't do the job without it but this has changed over the recent years as university is getting to be a prerequisite for most jobs

Historically, a profession meant a a specific qualification (like accountancy or nursing) or degree was required whereas a trade required an apprenticeship. Anything else was unskilled.

And don't shoot the messenger- I'm just attempting to give a definition. Not an opinion.

Exactly but seemingly some are viewing it as a class thing, certain profiles saying professionals only? As though considering anyone who doesn’t do a high ranking white collar job is a moron. What’s the difference between someone who spends there day getting mucky and a office worker, who’s to say there’s a pay gap

I'm a trucker so class myself as a professional driver as I need specific licences and compulsory training every year.

But I wouldn't use the term professional in conversation or on my bio, as at the end of the day, I'm still just a trucker

I always tbought it added a certain panache to a profile! Looks like i was mistaken!

I meant it to convey tbat fact that i was employed, solvent, busy, intelligent, serious (about certain things). Sort of thinv your prospective fatger in law would approve of! And appealing to the nesting instinct of women - then there was the dirty stuff on top of that!

I think the term was easily understood in the 70's, where it probably meant managerial white collar workers. I don't know what it means, nowadays, other than, when used here it seems to mean"i want to meet people like me". I havnt seen any profiles which exclude professionals, strangely enough.

Professional is generally someone who is in the upper middle class, CEO's, Lawyers, Accountants, doctors or an elevated trade.

Professional photographer is someone who makes 75% of their living from their trade.

Opposed to trades persons builders, plumbers, electricians etc. Many who are more professional than many of the so called professionals.

The word professional in the context on any of these sites is to try and represent themselves as an elevated person. Simple class distinction.

Usually a stated professional is living in a fancy house with a flash car, nice clothes, food and wine whilst mortgaged to the hilt, maxed out on credit cards, and trapped in a spiral of keeping up with equally fake friends...

Whereas a blue collar worker in the manual labour industry would be referred to as a tradesperson. Personally I don't see anything socially inacceptable about using these definitions to refer to oneself, however as with many things it's the way you say it. In the grand scheme of things both types of jobs are just as important to society; yes you might need a doctor to save your life or an accountant to manage your finances but just try living without electricity or working plumbing for a day!!

There is no truck drivers earning twice what a solicitor earns unless she is completly useless and on minimum wage and he must be driving away over his hours. Driving 2 weeks in 7 days

Another grey area. If someone has a profession I would say they are a professional.

I always took it to meet they had a job.

Whatever that profession is, it's a profession whether that makes someone a professional cleaner or professional dog walker remains up for debate.

Im going to put a completely blank profile up then no one can have a go.

You put things on your profile that you think people will respond positively to (not what you "think will get you laid").

I think that some people will respect the fact that i have a responsible job. I know my friends appreciate it, i know my clients appreciate it and i know my kids appreciate it. If you dont appreciate it, dont message me. If i dont like doms, i dont message them - if people like that, then fine - message them.

Here , I find that those who don't have a profession find it pompous.

There are also those that shriek at you that they are professional in their work. They may very well be but that isn't be a professional.

A profession is recognised and listed e.g. lawyer, doctor, teacher ..... I believe the list has been widened to accommodate other professions.

And yes I do know people who have a profession who are not professional.

Doesn't really tell you much about that person and what they are like in company or at sex.

The context of and spirit of the post was about using the word "a professional" in a profile is the question not about being a professional individual or a criticism of being one. It is the reasoning why do people feel they have to present themselves by using the term "professional", and the motives for doing so - that's all.

We tend to view professionals as people working in a regulated industry with a governing body. Like social workers, doctors etc. If I were a social worker, and got outed for being in the lifestyle, I'd probably not only lose my job, but also my right to ever work as one again.

Therefore we see it as meaning "additional discretion required because I don't want to lose my registration"
