January holiday suggestions

On a mooch

Times a changing in my world come January and so the first thing I’m going to do in my 49th year, after leaving my job, is treat myself to a holiday just for me (no kid, he has school anyway) and recharge the batteries.

So where can I go, country, city, resort, where it’s going to be warm, can relax on a beach, explore (on my own safely) the local culture and history for 10-14 days ?

Suggestions/recommendations please

Barbados! It's warm, hardly rains at that time of year. The only thing is it is high season so accomadation can be slightly more expensive. The beaches are honestly beautiful and there's so much culture and you can island hop and eat freshly caught flying fish on the beach at night.

Really does depend on budget (crass I know).

Barbados, specifically the Fairmont Royal Pavilion is fantastic, if expensive. White beaches, great culture, swimming with turtles and felt safe.

London

St Lucia, Antigua, Seychelles, Hawaii, Bali, Turkey and Dubai would be my picks for a solo holiday except Dubai

PDI Gran Canaria. Few good swinging bars and clubs and massive dunes for relaxing on. We went for 4 nights last year and loved it

For different reasons, in a similar position..

Looking around, I decided although happy on holiday by myself, I didn't want to be surrounded by loved up couples or ankle biters, so looked at solo holidays and found the viking river cruises have some solos ones so thinking of that although not sure about January...

When it's warmer will just ride off on my motorbike

The river cruises sound great.

Understand what you mean by the lived up couples haha, but before the lad came along I always holidayed on my own, so that doesn’t bother me - wouldn’t obviously pick a typical honeymoon spot lol

La Gomera is the best canary island, its beautiful and has a rain forest on the island!!

Closely followed by La Palma, it has loads of beautiful walks!!

Both are far better in my opinion than the usual 4 islands that everyone holidays too!!

Could you explore outside the hotel quite safely on your own ?

I’m not one for sitting still within the walls of a resort

It was just dessert around the hotel but they had a free shuttle bus into the city twice a day each way or it was a fiver in a taxi. We also took trips up to berber villages and waterfalls in the mountains. We were also recommended to visit Aït Benhaddou which is the oldest kasbah and Ouarzazate which is nicknamed "the gateway to the sahara" but didn't get round to that.

I just fell in love with the country and now I want to visit other cities like Fez, Agadir, Chefchaouen (the blue city) and Essaouira which is a coastal port city.
