Do you keep stuff for “Best”

When visiting grandparents and aunties etc, they all had stuff like glasses and plates for “ best “. It was never used . Just kept for special occasions. Not that it was super expensive just probably a bit more than run of the mill stuff. Some even had entire “best rooms”, normally the front room which was always off limits, being packed full of stuff for “best”. Parents did it to a lesser degree and I did too. But nowadays , I use all expensive cut glass, dinner services, cars, watches etc. I mean what’s the point of buying stuff if your never ever gonna use it

Nope... it's a waste. I use my Nana's dishware every day... it hasn't broken yet and is 50 odd years old... when it does give up the ghost, I'll get new stuff.

When she passed away I was so sad to see the bottle of Chanel no 5 I'd bought her 3 christmases ago just sitting there...I bought it for her to wear... not for it to sit on a shelf for 'best'

Brighton - even Hove!

Don’t have anything that’s best. It’s all good stuff anyway and in the end just things.

Yes I'm terrible for it with clothes - then I buy more clothes which are also for best. So I have lots of hardly worn, best clothes and shoes

No. Life is too short. I like to use the best for every day. I love Emma Bridgewater and cath kidston crockery. I have cut glass wear. If I want something and it's within my means I have it. Losing both my parents young I want to make the most of the time I have enjoying it

it used to be necessary to have things for best only because people couldn't afford to replace them if they got damaged or broken.

I think we might eventually have to return to those days for ecological reasons

I’ve got a couple of watches costing over £4K each which I used to wear out for big functions and classy restaurants but now I wear them every day . Same for cut crystal glasses for high days and holidays now use them all the time . I mean if u have a £60 wine or a £200 champagne , why use cheapo Tesco value micro thin crap glasses

Yes I have some single malts, you have to really be ‘best’ to get a fingers worth in a proper glass, that is specially kept for it.

However I also do remember, front rooms being no go areas

I always wore my second best stuff to work and best stuff outside of work. Someone once said I always turned up for work looking as if I was going out to dinner

I do keep things for best, shirts, shoes, watches....but I always wear them when I go out, so the do get use, but maybe not as much as they should do considering the money spent on them!!

.....

My aunty though....she kept her living room like a show room for well over 10 years....no one was allowed in the there....even the kids weren't allowed in there, no playing, no toys, no tv watching, couldn't sit on the sofa....I'm not even kidding....it was madness!! Haha
