"Simon Weston was once told to leave a restaurant as the manager said his appearance was putting off other diners. Appalling. " Appalling indeed. No one should be treated differently or made to hide away because they are not deemed the norm Those that take offence are the shallow ones, unaccepting and only ficus on the outside. God forbid they ever have someone they know be in that situation where they are suddenly different through no fault of their own, as I think they wouldn’t have the strength to support them

"My first true example of human strength and courage was Simon Weston. I remember watching his story as a child and being astonished and shocked by what he was experiencing with his wounds. The pure mental strength he has shown to recover from that and prove to everyone your life isn’t over. He’s carved out a normal life for himself and his charity work to help others is unquestionable. Him like so many that have followed, both military and civilian, have proved that just because you have probably experienced the worst moment in your life, you have amazing strength and courage to continue and make the best, and even excel. They are truly inspirational and shows you that there is nothing you can’t do if you have the will to do it " i agree he suffered horfific burns and still had a positive outlook so many people could and should benifit from his example

"Read all the way through this thread and seen lots of examples of heroes for different reasons and i honestly agree with them all, however, i would have to say Simon Weston too. I was about 10 when the Falklands war started and a few friends of the family were there, it was the first time i intently watched the news. Then when this story broke i cried, and i mean properly cried Surely he should be Sir Simon Weston, an inspiration to so many " Out of the night that covers me, Black as the pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul. In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the Horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds and shall find me unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.

You might want to look it up.

"Bill Hicks. He changed my view on the world and made me cry with laughter. He also taught me it was OK to be different and keep true to the life I want to lead not the one society expects of me. Iain Banks. His imagination blew my mind. I felt like I knew him through his work. It's a bit weird to mourn someone whom you've never met, but these two... " Terry Pratchett or Michael Crighton for me, but I so get it.
