I would use it in a sentence.

In the past I worked for....

My sister passed her exams.

Not sure if that's helpful.

My wee one is great at picking things like this up if we make up some kind of trick to remember. Like;

pasT = a Time

passeD = something you Did

Past is an adjective. It describes a known. A past event.

The past is a noun. It's a thing. I did that in the past.

Passed is a verb (a past participle to be precise). It is an action or a happening. The time has passed.
