Are you sure it's a rat?

I did consider fire but thought it a tad excessive. I've got a 12 gauge option too but might get into a bit of bother with that route

Most definitely, it's the size of a small cat.

East Yorkshire

Rat trap baited with peanut butter - it sticks to the trap and so they can't get it without triggering the trap.

Or borrow a Cairn terrier, when growing up ours was lethal to rats.

Or borrow a ferret.

I had a bird in my house last year. I was screaming the place down. My 5 year old neighbour saved the day with his crabbing net.

I've gotta woman up and try and usher it out. Or I'm going hungry.

If I'm not back in an hour, call the authorities, because the bastard will have dragged me to its lair for supper.

Breaking News: Ratgate is solved. Breaking News: Ratgate is solved. Breaking News...

I wimped out. I got a reliable man in to come and dispose of the offending creature. It's now very, very dead. After a brief struggle, and much swearing, he managed to biff the beast over its head with a spade. He's even cleaning the kitchen for me. What a guy.
