I got a letter today saying that I owe £13.90. Quite a few people round where I live have been taken to court for outstanding debts.

I was gonna pay £25 when I get paid again next Tuesday. Guess who's gonna be receiving a big bag full of shrapnel on their counter on Monday morning

Bastards, I've been summonsed for paying late even though I'm actually ahead of my bill (in money not time) and if I carried in paying the amount I'm paying I'd be done a month early. Not any more, the fine will see to that!

Yep, I'm being fined for paying more than they were asking each month, just late.

My council tax is ridiculous, £200 + a month and extra for a green bin and they won't remove one extra bag or take glass. I don't know how some people can afford to pay so much.

Give it them in pennies

In the UK, it's illegal to use only 1p and 2p coins to pay for any single transaction costing over 20p.

And I'm a problem pointer-outer. You can only use up to £5 worth of 10p coins in any one transaction

If you're a big spender you can pay up to £10 in 20p and 50p coins. You can pay any amount with £1 coins and above.

In a town Fab forgot

I got a bill for business rates on my unit, £180 a month.

I was about to pay it when my next door neighbour told me my unit was below the rateable size and to appeal.

I appealed.

They wrote back and told me size of my unit, the rateable value and stated that it was below the rateable size.

Uhhm. So you knew the rateable value, knew my unit was below the rateable size and knew the rates weren't applicable.

But you still sent me a bill for £180 a month........

That's fraud isn't it?

Ask Thomas

Seriously though, if you've been paying over the odds, you should be due a refund, and let them make it crystal clear exactly what you should be paying, so you can work it into your budget.

Nobody likes unsuspected bills

No it's not as it's legal tender (you could pay it in postage stamps if you wanted to) but anything over £13 paid in 1ps can be subject to an admin fee for processing by the payee.

Bastards aren't they. I had this (well, similar) with a business too. I only found out from another trader they were doing a £1000 discount for units under a certain rateable value. I'd been paying for nearly a year! You had to phone up and ask them to deduct the discount?

how about council tax is based on each person in a house and therefore the users and consumers of services, not some random number of people and the value of the property 30 odd years ago

Have you got that much money in shrapnel in your house or will you have to go and get that much money in shrapnel once you get paid especially for it. If so sounds like a bit of a sad effort just to pay your council tax. To be honest I'm sure the council won't be too bothered either way as long as they get paid. As to the council employee who has to pop the money in the money counting machine they may or may not be bothered depending how much they like dealing with coins (personally I'd enjoy sorting the money).

They (Derby City Council) said that as I hadn't kept up my monthly payments, then I had to pay the outstanding balance by the 12th of Oct or they could take it to court. I didn't get paid until yesterday, so I paid it all off in one lump sum.

They are highly unlikely to send the bailiffs round unless you owe an extortionate amount and the debt has been through at least one court proceeding x

I can always send them an email to the complaints department but probably fall on deaf ears.

So many councils waste money. My council had a target of saving 9 million over the next 3 years. So far to reach that target they have spent nearly 12 million and the services have gotten worse with less staff

People have been to jail for not paying council tax and bailiffs are real.

I really feel for people who can't afford it and then face such consequences

I spent nearly a year working on the revamp of the Council House in Derby. It now hosts the Job Centre and Library, both of which now stand empty and probably will remain so for the foreseeable future. When I worked on there, they had all the roof tiles off and refelted underneath. Why couldn't they have at least put some solar panels up? They would have paid for themselves several times over by now.

I could go on. The mind boggles.

I love Derby, I'm born & bred here, it's just a shame that the people in power don't have the same feelings sometimes

Bailiffs are real and I deal with customers on a daily who get them knocking on their door. I even have dealt with instances where a bailiff come knocking after 20 odd years chasing a debt. Most councils use a bailiff who use track and trace to locate people.. if u can evade them then your in luck..

And its harrowing some of the stories I have seen and heard. People gotta go with out food etc for council tax. Such a sad state of affairs at times.

On a different tangent, I have been in this flat for 6 years, when I first moved in ma water rates were about £15 p/m, now they're £40. How the hell does that make any sense?

"In the UK, it's illegal to use only 1p and 2p coins to pay for any single transaction costing over 20p.

Use 5ps too?

Only up to £5 worth apparently

Rest in 10ps... I'm a problem solver

And I'm a problem pointer-outer. You can only use up to £5 worth of 10p coins in any one transaction

If you're a big spender you can pay up to £10 in 20p and 50p coins. You can pay any amount with £1 coins and above."

It's not illegal, but whomever you're paying isn't obliged to take them.

The only way u don't pay council tax is if your exempt. Few examples are students, those who receive full amount of council tax reduction and housing benefit and quite a few other exemptions

Why don't we stop all this bickering and all go out for pint. I am sure there are one or two who won't stand their round but don't worry. The rest of us will pay more so you won't have to. The pub landlord will be happy because his beer has been paid for in full, the non payers will be happy because they have had free beer. If anyone complains about the drinkers who drink for free then they are free to moan. The non payers can then get their own back by paying in shrapnel. Can't think of a fairer night out.

Due to health issues, I only pay about 25% of the full amount as I'm not working and am on UC, I only pay what I can afford, food and electric comes first obviously, but when they threaten to take you to court and stick charges on top as well, surely if you can't or are struggling to pay them in the first place then that's like taking one step up the ladder and slipping two rungs down.

"I got a letter today saying that I owe £13.90. Quite a few people round where I live have been taken to court for outstanding debts.

I was gonna pay £25 when I get paid again next Tuesday. Guess who's gonna be receiving a big bag full of shrapnel on their counter on Monday morning "

I wouldn't pay too much attention to the court bit. It's just their procedure to go straight to court, but it's not a hearing that will bankrupt you, affect your credit rating or set bailiffs on you. It's to do with simply registering a debt. It sounds heavy-handed and I don't know why they do it, but it's not the same as somebody else taking you to court.

Couple of months ago I was waiting for my council tax to be re-evaluates and I got the new bill as well as a court summons for late payment both on the same day.

I’m a full time student, I don’t pay council tax so had to then ring them and sort it out again.

Apparently the £300 I owed them was for last summer when I finished my college course in July and before I started my degree in September.

Good luck with that they want cash and send all sorts of demands out because its the cheapest way but they will go to the high court and send enforcement offers round which adds a ridiculous amount to the bill. I have heard of a £200 debt escalating to £1500 which isn't exactly fair. Best thing to do is clear your debt asap and if you can't communicate with them.

eeeerh nope that would be theories, Im talking from 10 years researching Law ,and Legislation i have done my research and understand what is natural Law and common /Civil Law ...if you dont then instead of trying to take the piss , go and see how powerful your consent is , or dont and get ripped off and bullied. On your own doorstep by a bailif who has less power then next doors cat ....

Try not to be a dick the preson taking payment is just that a Person you making there job hard to get at the people that has piss you of has NO affect on there day to day and will never know it's happed.

There are other way which would make your point much better and not affect individuals with no control over the situation.

summons fornon payment of council tax oooer ,phone magistrates court tell usher the date of summons and say you need time , dont mention council tax . usher will go look then inform you , eg me , Liverpool magistrates court has outstanding summons for me , the only thing that can issue a summons is the court by "LAW" the council hire a court fill it with staff and freaudulantly intimidate you ..

"

Do you use/benefit from any of the services paid for council tax? Is it a case of can't pay or won't pay? I perfectly understand the former. It's fine saying its fraud etc, think I've heard similar talks but at the end of the day your still living in a world where many of the services we have our paid for by our collective labour through taxation. So yes it's fine saying they are robbing us, that's your opinion. But by the same hand to use any of the services provided and paid by the rest of the community is to steal of the rest of your community. I get you don't want to be forced to play by these rules but you should expect it both ways at the expense of everyone who does play by these rules, that's just Jack.

We just moved into our house wife phoned them to set up payments gave them our name and bank details. Three weeks later they send threatening letter saying we haven’t paid this month. So wife rang back telling lady on the phone she already called them. Lady denied she made the call so wife asked her if I never called how the hell they have our name at the new address lady couldn’t answer that.

Councils are an easy target.

They collect Council Tax, pay it into central government who give the council a percentage (not all) of it back.

That percentage has decreased every year for years and that leaves councils struggling to pay for all the things that we expect and central government promises that they won't fund.

What option do they have but to claw every last penny back that they can?
