If you had an unlimited budget and unlimited conscience to spend that budget purely on this day dream exercise.

What home would you choose to live in.. historically speaking? A Roman nobles villa? Greek clifftop fishing village? Tudor thatched cottage? Georgian Mansion?

How would you decorate it? To the period? Contemporary? Multi-period?

Personally I'd have a British Man-o-War built from scratch, bug converted into a family home for me and my sons (I'd probably have to moor it up at Gloucester Docks). Furnished and decorated like a Victorian Alladins cave of treasury I've picked up from around the globe. Not necessarily authentic, but curious and interesting.

It'd fly the Jolly Roger. And I'd hold Private Swingers parties on my weekends off.

I’d love a Georgian house. I’d keep the original features but would decorate it modern but with a classic twist. There’s a gorgeous town house not far from me that I’ve always wanted x

I'd like a house similar to the one we are in currently but a great deal larger. Victorian, detached, high ceilings, sympathetic to the period upgrades. I'd have one of those libraries which are all oak panelled and you can walk in and that biblichor smell from amassing various first and second editions of classics and modern literature, scores from various classical pieces.

I love Victorian tiling in bathrooms and one of those stand alone tubs. Oh and Minton tiling! The tiling in our hallway is my pride and joy.

Yes! That's a lovely idea. I'm hoping in a few years we can make a reading nook in one of our windows so we can see the garden and peacefully read.

I currently live in a flat in a huge old Victorian house. The area I live in is mostly made up of them. If money was no object I'd buy a whole one to myself. I'd probably decorate it in a modern take on art deco then go travelling with all my money and fill my house with souvenirs from my travels. I'd also have a huge workshop with a big window in it.

If money was no object then I would like a modern build with floor to ceiling glass windows everywhere I could have them. Large and open rooms filled with modern furnishings and decorated in, purples, reds and blacks. I'd have a lot of geeky stuff scattered about like Marvel and Manga memorabilia, and a bar in the basement decorated like a sports bar with ex players signed jerseys, signed balls, gloves etc

Set the house in a clearing in my own private forest in a nice warm part of the world and I'm golden

I like big Victorian homes.. Tons of rooms and levels. Designed to be a Alladins Cave of wonders.

The downsides are trying to change lightbulbs and buy curtains! We have lovely thick walls though and it's stayed lovely and cool during all these scorching temperatures!

Yes! And it retains heat beautifully in the winter. I absolutely love my house so much. For curtains we're using the owners old ones but I'm hoping a family member makes some up for me as a birthday present.

Somewhere In The Ether…

Can I have a Transilvanian castle please?

I love Gothic architecture and all things related.

Random weird but fun fact time; Did you know that the gothic style of sharp edges and pointed arches is alleged to have come about in order to prevent Old Nick himself from resting upon them?

No I didn't.

Seems there are lots of you with dreams of a Gothic home.

Our modern housing is so bland by comparison.

Same with modern cars.

Where has the Art gone in design these days?

Central

A roman villa, close to a barracks and bathhouse. The garden would be amazing, with many themed areas, an overall tropical feel and lush vegetation. The villa chosen due to early central heating but some modern extras. It would show the bright original murals, including bodies at their best.

Lots of toga optional parties

East Yorkshire

I would have the house I have, Victorian, 3 storeys, basement but I would also buy the other half of it from next door and knock through and have my own 8 bedroom mansion.

I would do all the renovation work that needs doing, stripping everything back to the original floorboards and stone floors.

Every room would be decorated or furnished in a different style, from gothic to oriental to whatever else takes my fancy. One room would be a library, full of old books and big leather chairs.

And I would invite everyone round for tea and cake or gin and tonic.

This is what I am doing anyway on my half of it - a long and expensive job.
