My local pub

Has banned the use of phones, iPads etc with a £10 fine to charity to anyone using it.

I think it's brilliant as there are other pubs who don't care but others are in uproar.

My argument is you can turn the volume off check your phone for urgent messages and go outside to call if needs be.

I guess pubs are evolving but to me it's a place to meet friends and catch up on life over a beer or six.

To see a table of friends earlier today just stare at there phones for two hours was quite sad

What are your thoughts ?

That is what my watch is for. My phone is on permanent silence. My watch alerts me to messages, calls and other such stuff. If I want to respond I do so.

I think it's a good idea. Pubs always used to be a place for socialising, technology has taken away the art of conversation in many ways

There's a great little pub in Soho that has the same policy - I've had fascinating conversations partly as a result of it. People are far more wanting to start up a conversation and it's a better environment overall.

There's a pub in beverley did this as well, they would confiscate them from you if caught. Though the building was so old and the walls so thick you struggled to get a signal any way half the time.

What did people do when there were no mobile phones in the past?

Of course they survived.

I think it's a good idea. People talking to each other in person would be weird though. If they're not posting pics every 5 minutes how would they know it was real?

Love the idea .. a pub is a social place and mobiles are so anti social.. heads up and talk to someone, you just never know who you might meet

I think it's a great idea. People are slowly losing their social skills due to social media etc. Should be called anti social media really.

I’m reading thread titles wrong just now and thought this said ‘my local sub’ at first

Nice idea though, it has become almost like a nervous reaction to reach for the phone in any moment of pause. Bring on actual conversations.

We go there and I agree. I even met somebody who ended up on Fab in there.

I only use my phone in a pub if I'm sat waiting for someone. I've seen couples that are constantly on their bookface or whatever, and hardly a word is exchanged between them. Nothing to do with me I suppose, but if I go to a pub, I go to socialise with people face to face, not spend an hour or two with ma head buried in ma phone. I can ignore ma partner when I get home.

If I am out socialising with someone then the phone stops in the bag full stop.

I've been on nights out before now and if you believed what the pictures portrayed then you would think it was a great night.

However the reality was miserable adults sat around staring at phones until someone held a phone up, it was like a beacon! A switch flicked where suddenly it was all laughing, trout pouts and smiling central.

Then as soon as the phone is put down social ineptness resumed

Bizarre behaviour. And I wonder what skills we are losing by being so internalised.

I would rather enjoy the moment that photograph it. I remember when photos were precious and you were economical on what you took as you only had 36 exposures

It's so funny to watch, luckily my dogs don't mind and are happy to come to a tech free pub as they get extra fusses because the patrons now get to look around and see what's happening.

One new patron said to me that he was surprised that the view from the pub contains a river !

I told him it was only built last week

So true!!

I know couples where they post a pic of every date they go on. It's like being sat in a 70's living room watching roll after roll of someone's holiday pics on their creaky projector.

The ones with the most pics usually split up soon after.

I think shops should ban phones too it’s so ignorant seeing someone on the phone talking as they are paying at the till. If I worked in a shop I would refuse to serve them.

Great idea, last night I was in a pub and stood near a table with 5 people say all on their phones, they didn’t speak to each other for 5/10 minutes until one of the girls asked another to take a pic so she could update a status and “checked” them all in ??????????

Crazy world we’re living in !!!
