It's totally impossible, it's only theoretically possible by travelling faster than the speed of light therefore 'beating' the event to it's own starting point. Time dilation tells us that the faster we travel through time the slower time itself passes - that's why people walking by the train when you're sat on the train appear to be moving in slow motion. So no, not possible but a fun concept.

The Newtonian schema ,300 years old, still persists(as our universe as forward running).

Now wirh quantum physics that no longer holds.

The lagrangian schema avoids paradoxes.

a light ray travels from point a to point b.

this action corresponds to the amount of travel time, the path is the fastest route the light only seems to possess knowledge about point b or the obstacles to overcome.

Albert Einstein liked time distortion ,as gravity is the distortion of space-time itself.

The measurement of time is a process invented by Man .

Time travel therefore may be possible

Travel forwards in time: definitely yes.

Travel backwards in time: probably not.

Sorry for the next bit: I'm going to get a bit technical and far too serious by half.

Going forwards by 1 second for "everyone else's" second is trivially easy - we all do that.

Going forwards by more or less than 1 second for everyone else's second can be arranged and is well understood - it's one of the outcomes of relativity. You can arrange it with relative speeds (they have to be very large to be noticeable) - which is what special relativity is about; or with acceleration or gravity - for which you need general relativity. The GPS system actually has to correct for the gravity version in the timing signals it sends out - otherwise they would drift over time and so would our position fix on Earth.

Going back in time - that's trickier. Probably impossible due to various paradoxes that might occur, although it is possible that they merely place restrictions on what kind of time travel to the past is possible and what you might be able to do when you get there. Or mostly what you might *not* be able to do.

I'll stop there before I get too involved . I might have spent too long contemplating this subject...

Travelling forwards in time is already theoretically possible, travelling backwards is not, depending on what your definition of time travel is. Like a lot of things imagined but not yet created, the main issue is one of power. We don't yet have a sufficient practical source of power to enable us to travel at the speed of light, or even beyond it. At the moment, we can only harness the power of atoms. When we can harness the power of a star, then it may be possible.

Think about this.... one day, when we can travel faster than the speed of light, and it will happen (people said you could never go faster than the speed of light but Concorde did), then you will be able to go back in time and see things that are no longer here today..... go on, think it through.

Sadly getting to the speed of light isn't just a question of more power . If you accelerate something (with mass) you find that it takes more and more energy to accelerate each little bit as you get faster. In fact, it would take an infinite amount of energy to accelerate something with mass (however small) to the speed of light, so even all the energy in the whole universe isn't enough .

Other possible ways of making time machines have been proposed though. I remember seeing one that involved spinning a heavy enough neutron star fast enough. Nobody was quite sure if it would actually work of if it would reveal some reason why you *couldn't* spin the star that fast.

In any case that type of time machine could only take you back as far as the point at which you created the machine (spun up the star). Which would neatly take care of the "so why don't we see time travellers now?" problem.

MrD

Too many posts to reply to!

.

Forwards I'm time

We move through time at 1 second, per second. The speed of light is affected by a number of factors, including speed of an object, pressure, temperature and gravity, creating a time dilation effect (slowing down time). This is not a theory, this is a proven fact by many experiments using atomic clocks. This is why forward time travel is actually possible, because time (speed of light) is "relative". If you had 2 twins and humans placed a space station orbiting mercury with one twin on and another orbiting Pluto with the other twin on, when the twins came back to Earth the 2 twins would be different ages, thus forward time travel by time dilation. The trick is to be able to combine these factors and build a contained time dilation field here on earth.

A side note. Although not exactly the same, they have actually created a chip that can slow the speed of light. Just Google: "chip IBM slow speed of light"

.

Backwards in time

The person that said yes its possible E=MC2 actually that equation tells us that it is not possible, because if you had all the power in the universe, you would still never be able to exceed the speed of light.

There are, of course, theoretical ways around this. Such as wormholes, which cut through the curvature of space-time without ever even reaching the speed of light. However, there is no real, proven and documented way for an object with mass, such as a person, to reach the speed of light.

.

Contacting the past

Because any object with mass cannot be accelerated to the speed of light, you are unable to to travel back in time. However, can something with zero mass travel back in time? For example, a radio signal or light itself?

Computers and digital signals are boolean. They only know 2 things, on and off, represented in binary as 1 and 0. Therefore any signal you wish to send back in time only needs these 2 values.

Theoretically, it may be possible if you could accelerate this signal faster than the speed of light and having zero mass, may in some way be possible.

Then there is a real, proven and documented aspect of light called quantum entanglement. We all know light is a wave right? Well actually it is both a wave and a particle at the same time. It remains both until it is measured as one or the other, and then becomes what you measured it as. For example, when you create a beam of light from a laser, it is both a wave and a particle. Once you physically measure the wave, the entire beam from the laser becomes a wave and not a particle. Likewise, once you physically measure the particle, the entire beam from the laser becomes a particle and not a wave.

Interesting but how do you use this to send a signal backwards in time?

It is actually simple. You split the beam from the laser in two, one half going a very short distance and the other half going a very long distance, meaning the short distance reaches it destination first. When you measure the long distance as a wave, the short distance becomes a wave and when you measure the long distance as a particle, the short distance becomes a particle.

The thing about this is that the short distance, reaching its destination first, becomes a wave or particle before you have physically measured the long distance as a wave or particle. By assigning a 1 and 0 to a wave and partial you then have a digital signal.

If the short distance was 0.5s and the long distance was 24hrs, you could then receive a signal over the short distance (of particles and waves representing 1's and 0's) 24hrs before you physically created the signal over the long distance.

A government could effectively create a 24hr warning system for national security purposes... Or maybe they already have

No, I don't believe it is possible, simply due to the Paradoxes that would occur in such an event.

The Grandfather paradox being perhaps one of the better explained.

Any action carried out on a journey to the past would have repercussions on the present - but of course, the past can not be changed so if anybody has made it back in time, their actions have already taken place.

They have, bit they get called crazy and are ridiculed.

Because just imagine the mess it would cause with the governments trying to take advantage of it and the military trying to weapon-is it

I believe in time travel . . It always travels extremely quickly when you're on holiday!

Not until recently. Somehow there has become a rip in the space-time continuum and the 1990s is leaking into our present day. Don't believe me? Well look around the evidence of the evidence is everywhere:

Kids wearing bright large logo tops

High waisted denim

Trainers with pretty dresses

Homeless people on every street corner

Lots of cars with steering wheel locks on

I can refuse the eveidence, somehow the 90s has leaked into our present day.

"So me and my 9 are watching crap on you tube we have just watched something about a train that was built in 1911 and went into a tunnel and never came back out of it, yet there Are sightings of it back in history with no explanation

Mrscxxx "

Sounds like a standard British rail trick back in the day.

I was often stood around waiting for trains that never arrived, assumed to be missing

"On faster than light travel. There is an interesting concept called the Alqubierre drive that’s suppose to make the space around you move rather than you move through space.

I think you could break light speed using it in theory"

You can appear to time travel, and you can appear to break the speed of light, but you dont really.

Time as we understand it is nothing other than our movement through space. What is 1 second? its a small movement around the sun, nothing more.

This means that time is not a real thing and it changes based on your speed. For example people on top of a mountain are actually "time travelling" as they are actually moving through space at a different speed and aging differently to people at sea level. People in space are "time travelling" too, and so are people at the speed of light or beyond it.

But really people are just moving at different speeds through space.

So to go back in time you have to move the entire earth and suns movement backward.

In order for this to work time has to be a real thing, not just a way for us to measure movement. It has to be a real strand that you can remove yourself from and then re-enter at any point.

The answer lies in inner space ( Quantum Mechanics ) which is far more weird than outer space imo

I agree with you but also somewhat disagree. Space is different than time where time is the 4th dimension so it is kind of incorrect to say this. However, I understand what you are saying, that time is a measurement which we created a unit, based on the Earth's movement around the sun. I guess it's just a matter of semantics. However, by that logic speed is nothing more than something we created a unit to measure and therefore you can't really travel at different speeds, you only change your relative position to other objects at any given time frame.

Everything is relative to everything else around it, whether that's objects, speed, time, temperature, light, etc. So when you say you can't actually step into a machine and step out in another point in time, the answer it actually yes you can and no you can't at the same time. To you, stepping into a machine that generates a time dilation field, the passage of time around you slows down. When you reach the point in the future you wish to travel too, you remove the time dilation field and the passage of time synchronises with the outside world again, allowing you to exit the machine. As far as you are concerned, you have just stepped into the machine and stepped out again in the future. Thus you have just travelled forwards in time relative to yourself. What you are describing is that, relative to the outside world, you haven't really traveled in time at all. Your friend watched you get in the machine, you froze in a kind of suspended animation with no heartbeat etc, then they watched you become "normal" again and step out of the machine. 10 years could have passed that they had visited you, yet you haven't aged a day. It is similar to how it would look to you, and the outside world, if you were cryogenically frozen.

It is the premise used in the famous novel The Time Machine by HG Wells and made into a movie. In it, you see time relative to him continue at a normal pace, while time passes faster in the world around him.

.

The way that time travel would need to work for everyone to see you jump from one point in time to another as you suggest, would be using a wormhole, theoretically from one point in space to any other like a tunnel, they believe could also pass from one point on time to another too. It could happen, but is much less likely to accomplish with our current understanding than traveling forwards by using time dilation.

I believe time travel is impossible due to universe continually expanding. Therefore to travel back in time would require the universe to return to the point you wish to travel back to.
