The position of my house means that the sun spends most of the day running along the side of the house, so even on the brightest of days, my living room is dull

how can I brighten things up ???

Mine is similar and just did it all in white, very light grey with touches of silver for a bit of glitter. It changed the room completely.

If possible, lighten the area outside of the window. For example if you have fence panels, consider painting them white.

Also consider borrowing light from other rooms, windows over doors or internal windows disguised as mirrors if need be will help.
