So long as you know it is there yes he can. You can ask for an explanation, how long footage is kept for, how secure it is and it's intended use.

I'm guessing if its over the till, then someone may have been helping themselves to a little un-taxed bonus now and then maybe, and he's hoping that a visible deterrent might stop them?

You can legally put covert cameras in if suspect stealing and do not have tell employees. Must be agreed with. RIPA form and only for intent of catching theft. Also only for a limited period of time.

It could also be used to see if customers are stealing? Even physical goods, or if a customer tries the old 'I gave you a £20' & you've given change from a £10?

The most likely answer was the one about the insurance company. My boss has recently done the same. There had been a few break ins in the area recently. Postcodes are used to estimate insurance costs. So to reduce costs she was advised to add cctv

No video probably means it's a digital recording system. Telling thieves that they can't access the system to remove incriminating evidence.

It's probably been installed at the request of insurers or they threaten to cancel policies.

I can't see what you're annoyed about really. Wouldn't you want to protect your business, by following insurers requests?

That will be a camera channel on the device that has no camera connected to it he will leave it there so no one sees what is really being recorded so no one can see where the blind spots are

How about looking at this from another viewpoint. If your till was being robbed, would you not want there to be some video of the thieves?

Rather than fret or seethe about it, treat it as a silent witness like you do with street mounted cameras.

The main receiver box will have a certain number of channels, say 5, if cameras are connected to 1,2,3,4 you will see these images, if no video source/camera is plugged into port 5 on the receiver it’s will show no video. It’s just the default set up of the display screen

Have installed these systems at my business premises.

So what you wanted to know, you can still get up to no good in the no video areas

Hello there Granny, this is the second time our paths have crossed in less than a week!

We all have a right to our privacy, and I believe that arguing that you don't care about this - because you're "innocent" (yeah right ha ha) and have "nothing to hide", is no different than saying you don't care about free speech - because you have nothing to say.

As someone else pointed out it could be for insurance purposes

Business insurance with personal liability is expensive , he may have changed providers that have given him a good deal on the proviso that he installs CCTV

If I was you I would see it as a good thing , it protects you as well should any discrepancies in the till occur and protects him too

"Visual deterrent to customers. No video means he isnt bothered about watching you"

The “No video” just means there is no camera plugged into that port on the recorder (DVR).

If it’s a split screen it can usually only display 1, 4, 5, 6 or 8 cameras depending on the recorder.

A good installer would have taken the no video out in the configuration.

He may have a reason behind the sudden installation something may have happened and he’s looking for either proof or more protection. I find this every day in my job where cctv is more prevalent

Just carry on with your normal day to day job and ignore them

You can't reasonably expect privacy at work, especially when you're customer facing. If he is leaving so soon what is the harm in saying "I've noticed that you've installed security cameras, is there a security concern I need to be aware of?"
