What do you call a male midwife?

Or a male “sister” or “matron” in a hospital?

Are there any other jobs that both sexes do but are referred to as only being by one sex?

A male midwife is still a midwife.

But I believe the term sister was dropped in favour of Ward Manager.

The connotation now for midwife is not gender specific

In my line of work we have:

Pilotmen

Secondmen

And regardless of sex you describe someone from another location in terms of (for example) they're a Manchester man or a Liverpool man.

Clearly we have plenty of women in the industry but no one seems offended by these historic terms.
