Me and a few mates used to pick them up for a giggle.

They often wanted dropping off after about 10 minutes for some reason

I did lots of it in the 70s both here and abroad, and found Britain, followed closely by Germany and then Canada to be the best for it. France was the worst and Greece was the scariest.

Great times......

I rarely see people hitch-hiking these days though, and if I had teenagers who considered hitch-hiking I'd probably caution them against it. Too many nasty types around now, unfortunately.
