Long Term Strategy

What long term, strategic solutions to societies biggest problems would you like to see implemented to improve society for all of us? In Britain, your home town, or globally.

Personally I'd like to make our Education System free for life, for every British Citizen. I'd make it the core of our society and base everything else around it.

Go big, go small.. go left, go right.. keep it civil, but feel free to debate like people, not politicians.

Lots of upcoming problems on the horizon and a queue of issues building up that could do with having the 20/30/50/100yr thinking cap put on for. Rather than this 4/5yr quick, bodge it job, bullshit we have to put up with.

Agree GK, theres so much in the way of schools pushing kids into the uni direction, this is fine but within so many engineering roles many of the skills cannot be taught in a textbook and its causing a real void. So many have all the qualifications but no idea and are not suited to the role they end up working in.

I think its important people are steered down the paths they're naturally talented or enjoy. That way they'll be the best candidate for the role they gently slip into.

If every job paid the same.. it'd probably what would happen naturally, but we place different values on different skill sets, yet we're all interdependent and useless without one another.

Wrong people, or wrong skillset for jobs wastes a lot of time and money, patience and training.

The right place

The current economic system is set up to extract wealth from the general population and filter it up to the top 1%. They also own and control most of the media and have somehow managed to convince people that austerity and spending on public services (through taxation) is a bad thing. The super rich don’t want us to invest in public services, they use private schools and healthcare.

I’d like to see the reduction in the gap between rich and poor (and when I say rich.. I mean 7 or 8 figure incomes and up). I’d like to see more investment in public services. And corporations contributing more rather than extracting money.

Raise the lower tax threshold slightly, and do the reverse to the upper tax threshold. Increase the amount of tax paid by the rest slightly.

Scrap overseas aid.

Make it mandatory that anyone who isn't a British citizen pays for medical treatment.

Give tax incentives to companies to employ trade apprentices.

Make people pay for missed GP appointments.

Eliminate tax loopholes that large companies use to avoid paying tax.

Anyone claiming benefits should do local community work for a few hours a week, (if they are capable) help them develop skills that employers want.

Employ local small firms to renovate empty housing stock, and build new houses.

This is where the most fundamental change is needed. I’d like to see nation economic borders dissolved so that we work for the good of the whole planet. Free eduction for all and a global health service funded through the reinvestment and redistribution of wealth. Transformative change of this sort comes at a price though, the revolution required is mind boggling and scary, the requirement for a new kind of leadership never more required.

I think that revolution is going to be forced on us with new uses of AI and automation. We can't all be service engineers to machines. What happens when transport industry goes automated over the space of 20-30yrs?

Itd be an apocalypse of the unemployed.. yet the jobs we are most desperate for now.. are the people to people jobs that are extremely hard and very low paid considering what we're asking of those sectors.

NHS, Mental health, social care, education, emergency services, carers.. 12hr shifts on their feet, shift work, emotionally traumatic, dangerous, jobs that people bring home with them for very little reward.

Isn't there a way we could embrace AI automation fully.. freeing people up to get back go our tribal roots? Taking care of each other?

I wish I knew!!

The 2008 financial crisis is a typical example of where the banks created the problem and the tax payers had to bail them out. Hardly any of the top executives got prosecuted. A few lost their jobs only to be re-hired again by other companies.

I love the film ‘The Big Short’ that gives a brilliant explanation of that period in ways that are understandable and entertaining.

Invest heavily in public health, from pre conception all the way through life. Make it a way of living, reduce the cost of healthy eating and tax the crap out of bad diets. The NHS is busting at the seams with illness and diseases that are preventable, and that lifestyle change will help.

It is well known the first few years of life pretty much set your life chances up, invest more in this. Better midwifery care, better support systems for the first few years. They have it right in Scotland- to reduce youth offending and health inequalities they have increased support for parents in the first few years.

I’m also a fan of having euthanasia bought in in the UK, I do not like the way we allow people to suffer having seen it personally and professionally.

Maybe that is the way things will go. AI and automation will do so many more of the operational jobs for us, as well as some of the more strategic jobs. The thing that will be irreplaceable are those that require face-to-face communication, courage, compassion, caregiving etc. Leisure and sport will become increasingly important as the way we spend our time will need to be redistributed. How we help the elderly is close to the crisis stage now, that will increase in criticality as continue to find better cures for the major illnesses and diseases. With the environmental impact of our pollution now beyond the tipping point, strategies need to be radical for how we can deal with effects and resources allocated to them. The incremental improvements are like pissing in the wind really.

I think society would change hugely if every politician and their immediate families had to use the NHS, state education and live on benefits for one year before they could stand for office. Once elected they would have to continue to use the NHS especially the minister for health.

World wide the change that is required is underway, a huge reduction in population. Climate change will see to that in ways that I don't want to contemplate. I would hope that a kinder more egalitarian society will come from it but given human nature I doubt it.

I am a hopeful person by nature but I think we've left it too late to implement any changes.

PR for selecting governments. It usually forces politicians to cooperate and it prevents minority governments from doing anything too stupid. It works for the Germans.

All the money being wasted on HS2, Heathrow, Trident, etc spent on apprenticeships in the renewable energy sector and robot maintenance.

And, since we've already had euthanasia, another controversial one; the money that is spent on NHS IFV treatment transferred to free gastric bands for the obese.

People keep mentioning apprenticeships in trades and whilst we need tradesmen I fear there's a lack of interest in maths and science that underpins the UK's lack of research and development spending.

Ultimately if you want to compete on a global level in today's business and technology arenas to come together to solve the bigger picture issues we need scientists, engineers and programmers.

Proportional representation in Parliament

Improved mental health services - the true parity between the importance of physical and mental health. Investment in prevention and early intervention in health so people don't have to reach crisis point before being eligible for help

Better parenting support, especially for those with children with additional needs, parents with disabilities and single parents.

Good quality social housing or a rent cap on private landlords

Increased funding for social care

Progressive taxation

Could we adapt the working week.. use AI to free more human time.. that can be given freely to something more humanitarian?

I know people who mock utopia or country argue against it.. use the argument that society would collapse into hedonism and nothing gets done.

I feel as a whole we are builders, artists, warriors, explorers, scientists by birth.. most of us have a drive to want to create and give. Want a sense of accomplishment. I feel like there would be the same amount of lazy dossers who give nothing back. Dont want to contribute or work.

Perhaps if we looked deeper into the causes of some mental health issues, we could reduce a lot of the symptoms.

Which in turn may reduce the overall number of people sitting at home and rotting in the dark.. alone and lonely.

How many more of those who sit at home doing nothing would be motivated to work for it.. if it gave them all the tools to follow their dreams and gave them the helping hand they needed along the way?

There unfortunately is so much wrong with this country from the start of your life in the education system through to the end of your life with no euthanasia

I don’t have the answers to any of this that wouldn’t have a knock on effect to other members of society poor and rich alike

We just have to make the best of what we have access to, supplement it how you can and take responsibility for your own lives and those you are responsible in guiding.

My only other solution is the eradication of all rules / governments and live as a true community looking after each other, no individual better than the other. This however, would also descend into chaos as there will always be those that like to be in charge and tell people how to live and others that will aimlessly follow like sheep as they can’t think for themselves

Improved mental health services - the true parity between the importance of physical and mental health. Investment in prevention and early intervention in health so people don't have to reach crisis point before being eligible for help

Better parenting support, especially for those with children with additional needs, parents with disabilities and single parents.

Increased funding for social care

"The obesity problem will be solved because hunger will become a huge problem in the nearish future"

No need for hunger. Rationing works and it needn't be as severe as it was in WWII.

For global warming limit of one child per couple for 25 years.

For society massive council house build, kill the private rental market. Build now to last 150 years, Finance over 50 years. Once built never sell, maybe give a cash deposit on private ownership but they must move out.

"Raise the lower tax threshold slightly, and do the reverse to the upper tax threshold.

Employ local small firms to renovate empty housing stock, and build new houses."

These get my vote

All well and good but where do you intend building all these required homes ?

Even when council homes were abundant before the sell off, there was still the private rental market there will always be a need for it

Ensure tax loop holes are dealt with, higher taxation on higher wages, ensure corporation tax is paid....

With most of these suggested, especially the prevention work it is actually way more cost effective in the long term - not just on the direct costs (e.g less operations, medication, care) but also the knock on impact to other areas such as employment and disposal income invested back into the economy. It just needs a short term investment which could be pulled in through unpaid taxes.

Also there is a point to be made about the indirect costs of physical and mental health on issues such as obesity. I know personally that a lot of my weight issues are down to a physical health condition and my depression. Eating is a symptom of other issues for me and I'm sure I'm not the only one!

I genuinely think people wouldn't mind paying more in tax for a better health and social care system.

We're quite a socialist bunch when we put our long term thinking caps on aren't we. Planning together to improve the things we all mostly agree on overall.

Much better manifesto pledges on this forum thread for swingers.. than I've seen in my time observing politics.

I think left and right could unite to form a stronger, kinder Britain.. changing the political landscape so it doesn't favour Economics over Ecology. Then start working on the shit they agree on.. whilst testing out each others solutions on the shit they dont.

"Can’t believe no ones said the main problem in this country and that’s dealing with the obesity crisis. We are literally heading towards a Wall E type situation.

It’s totally self inflicted too and completely avoidable.

Would you say the same about mental health issues? I think there’s a link. I wouldn’t oversimplify it.

It is a problem, what do *you* think we can do about it?"

I think that in a small minority of cases mental health issues do play a part, but that doesn’t explain why each generation is getting more obese. You have to look at other factors, like easy access to junk food, the fact the food industry spend billions on advertising each year. The fact you can order food through your phone and get it delivered to your door. The other factor is our sedentary lifestyle, humans naturally take the easy option, why walk to the shop when you can drive. I except in some small cases other factors play a part, but in the vast majority it’s cause junk food tastes too good, it’s too easy to get it delivered and people exercise a lot less, generally.

I have no idea what we can do about it, apart from except responsibility for our own bodies, I’m not Criticising, if that’s people’s choice to live that way, that’s up to them. The obvious answer would be to stop advertising junk food etc, but that would never happen.

Agreed it is what they teach, unfortunately (like most things) it is the minority that spoils it for most

I'd take a more common sense approach to people with additional needs. Resources are poor in schools but even worse when they become adults. They don't stop needing support, they face additional difficulties and our current system is quite short sighted in the way it continually pulls funding away from the organisations that provide vital support to these People.

For example children with autism don't grow out of it yet come 16 the support seems to end, yet they face a whole new set of challenges as do their families.

I'd also look at adult social care in general the system is so flawed and needs to be better resourced so people aren't forced to sell their souls to receive vital care

If you look into some of the research and pilots on universal basic income and universal basic services, you'll find significant cross party support.

So, consensus politics is possible, but it seldom translates into action and legislation.

A positive which I think is happening ina few schools is that they are teaching resilience. I’m not sure how but the notion of it being learnt is a good thing I think. I don’t know anyone who has just had an upward curve without setbacks and expectations of what reality is in the age of social media is a big risk to people’s level of happiness and wellbeing.

There are a lot of organisations which need voluntary help, the third sector is being diminished and is somehow taken for granted, a way to properly integrate that within a system would be good. Not to say all charities are whiter than white, they could also do with a bit more scrutiny. Known far too many cases where people turn a blind eye on those organisations. Sorry gone off topic.

I like the idea of universal basic income.

I'm not surprised many people haven't heard of it. Powers that be thrive on the division, the way things are.

Environmental devastations, coupled with major social issues that could be spawned from it, should be priority.

Top priority would be to halt the increases to increased global temperatures, sooner than 10 years. The partly connected other environmental problem, also caused by humans, is limiting extinctions to fewer species than predicted. Both involve massive changes to how billions of people live but also benefit us short and longer term.

Associated issues are availability of water and support for peaceful living, potentially including displaced people. Water shortages could increase, due to more catastrophic global heating. A more equitable world is needed. A refocus from personal consumption towards global recovery and greater harmony. Not simple things but these are simply the priority if the world, humans and other species are going to have a more certain future and that's more comfortable, whilst less disrupted and dangerous than what's currently more possible.

A tax levy on private healthcare company turnover. Funds raised pumped straight back into the NHS

A cap on rents in major cities - £x/sq ft

There's more, but it's late

That's my view.. long term strategy means we have to make room for the growth to come. Adapt our living so it's a combination of being a good blend of what is good for us as animals.. and what is best for our environment.

There is enough for everyone now.. just about.. if we shared equally. There'd be lots of room for excess and indulgence for more of us. Without losing productivity. If we designed cities and infrastructure.. intelligently. Goods network is pure chaos.

Imagine how intelligently we could redesign Britain.. if you could wipe all man made structures off and had to start again.

We'd pollute less and waste less.

Less roads.. more walking.. things within easy reach but long distances travelled much quicker.

More outdoor space set aside for play.. nature and nurture. More time off. I'd be happy in a concrete jungle where I have the space and comfort to escape from it. The time and freedom to escape into nature that we all need, but don't all get.
